W ellington’s Seaview Marina has just expanded, adding 45 new floating berths to take its offering up to a total of 366. A further 31 berths are consented to be completed by 2022. According to Seaview Marina CEO Alan McLellan there has been a massive upswing in demand for all of the marina’s services since Covid-19. “Demand for our berths, trailer parks and hardstand all have a waiting list for the first time in 18 years. We’ve never had this kind of level of enquiry before,” says Alan, something he puts down to people not being able to travel overseas and investing in boats. He says Seaview Marina is the only marina in the region that is still capable of adding more berths to meet demand. The remaining 31 berths to be added in 2022 will be in deep water so will include larg- er 16m, 18m and 20m berths to cater to larger vessels. Existing berths range from 10m-18m with also wider 14m and 18m catamaran berths available. The marina has also recently invested close to $400,000 in a 38-tonne Roodberg catama- ran retrieval trailer and 8.- tonne towing trailer that will now enable it to lift these larger vessels on the slipway. This complements the existing 50-tonne travel lift used for boats with a beam of up to 5.2m. Since the marina became a Council Con- trolled Trading Organisation 18 years ago significant development has taken place to develop the marina into a first-class facility providing everything a boatie would need for storing or servicing a vessel. It also includes 248 trailer parks within two compounds and a hardstand for up to 30 vessels stored in cradles. Other facilities include diesel fuel available at the hardstand dockway, a four bay launching ramp with floating pontoons and ablution and laundry facilities for 60 livea- board vessels. The marina also has a 2000sqm building, the Wellington Marine Centre, which provides retail and workshops for marine related services, It has a a 220sqm workshop space available for lease, into which the travel lift is able to transport boats. It is currently occupied by Wellington Elec- tric Boat Builders, which is building a ground breaking electric catamaran to provide the East by West Ferry facility with another vessel. his complex also includes tenancies including Burnsco Marine and Leisure, City Sea Canvas, MM Service, Mariners Insurance, MG Compos- ites and Strait Marine. A new addition is an 18m long x 8m wide x 6m high tunnel house, which will provide cover for boats undergoing maintenance and repairs. Complementary facilities offered to assist boat owners to maintain their vessels include security with monitored access and camera surveillance, a sealed concrete yard surface with waste containment and drainage, water blaster hire, quickslips, a free Six and One Certificate to provide evidence of washing or antifouling a vessel according to Ministry of Primary Industries guidelines, power and water supplied on the hardstand, cradles and hardstand space for hire, portable sewerage pump out and waste oil and battery disposal. Alan says the marina is currently exploring how it can further maximise the land area including opportunities to build additional premises to lease to businesses and retailers that would support boat owners even further.
