| 47 The first sections from Nga Roto Estate were released to the market in 2017 and upon completion the estate will comprise around 650 lots. Taupo - Carrus Corporation REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Nga Roto Estate is one of the largest residential development projects to take place in Taupo for a decade and Cheal is proud to be an integral part of it, says Cheal director Phil Rielly. Cheal has provided resourcemanagement planning, surveying, and civil and geotechnical engineering services for the project from its Taupo o ice. “We’re the only local consultancy that can provide the full suite of these services in-house. There is a large amount of synergy between each aspect of the project so having one company that can do it all has signi icant bene its, as big projects like these hinge on critical timing,” explains Phil. “The soils of Taupo are unique so utilising consultants who understand this brings additional bene its to local projects.” Challenges have included designing appropriate solutions tomeet consent requirements as stormwater gullies traversing the site necessitated an innovative stormwater and earthworks design. In fact getting services to the site at all has been another challenge, says Phil. The development is located on the fringes of an existing residential area meaning long extensions of sewerage andwater pipelines were required. Two di erent water pressure zones over the site have added to the complexity of the design and sequencing of the develop- ment. Cheal brings innovative and cost-ef- fective solutions for all aspects of infrastructure servicing not least of which has been utilising the natural gullies that run through the site as places to collect, treat and dispose of stormwater to ground soakage in a natural, low-impact manner. At the same time Cheal was able to create attractivewalkways and cycleway connections within corridors of native planting. Another example of Cheal’s innova- tive approach is the extensive use of drone technology for earthworks and topographical surveying. “Drone lying is safe for our employ- ees in otherwise di icult or dangerous situations such as a large-scale construc- tion sites like this one. It’s a smart tool providing accurate and detailed information in a cost-e ective, timely manner,” explains Phil. As the housingmarket has boomed, keeping upwith demand for sites has been the next challenge, he says. However Cheal employs over 40 sta in the Taupo o ice alone, whichmeans it has the resources based locally to successfully deliver outcomes for clients on projects of this scale and complexity. An award-winning, multi-disciplinary consultancy, Cheal o ers extensive expertise across the ields of engineer- ing, surveying, resourcemanagement planning and 3D laser scanning. Established in Taupo in 1940, Cheal has a long history and is a partner of choice acrossmuch of NewZealand. With o ices in Taupo, Hamilton, Rotorua, Napier and Ruapehu, the company provides a nationwide service to clients.
