54 | Facility will lift regional capacity Stage one is being constructed by local company Gemco Construction and a strong contingent of local businesses. T from page 52 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Hawke’s Bay - Kaweka Health Colin previously led the development of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s renal unit and then the new medical centre on Canning Road. He says there’s lots of moving parts to leading the development of a new health- care facility and acknowledges it’s an exciting opportunity to build a modern facility from concept through to securing funding, turning the soil and seeing the facility emerging from the ground. “It’s incredibly exciting to start with a vision of improving the well-being of our community, starting with a blank piece of paper and work- ing with an awesome team.” Stage one is being constructed by local company Gemco Construction and a strong contingent of local businesses including Patton Engineering, Lattey Precast, and RSM Reinforcing. The current works stage includes over 2,200 tonnes of concrete, 120 tonnes of structural steel and 9,500 concrete blocks. The entire site is 15,700sqm. Designed by HDT architects the building reflects the mountain ranges with angular features and earthy tones. It will also be the first Green Star rated healthcare facility in the region boasting energy efficient features and plenty of natural light. Colin says the aim is for a sustainable build- ing that provides a great patient experience and is also a pleasure for staff to work in. The hope is that this in turn might attract both local and international talent. “New Zealand has become a very attractive country for highly qualified specialists to relo- cate to and a new world-class elective surgery facility will ensure Hawke’s Bay is able to attract and retain more specialist doctors, who can work across both the private and public sector,” he says. “This is one of the most exciting health and infrastructure developments which will help get our region moving again, in this challeng- ing new economic environment. “Healthcare in Hawke’s Bay is facing unprec- edented challenges post Covid-19, with even more pressure on the growing waiting lists for elective surgery. “We are excited to support the health of Hawke’s Bay with our theatre facilities which will deliver a great deal of extra capacity to the region.” T Community well-being - page 56 southpacificlandscapes.co.nz Rider Levett Bucknall is proud to be supporting and providing Quantity Surveying & other construction cost management services for KAWEKA HEALTH, HASTINGS Providing greater access to quality private healthcare for the Hawkes Bay region and community.
