72 | Casket maker leads the way in quality, craftsmanship Windsor Industries Windsor has two CNC machines and a fully customised spray booth and paint mixing system. MANUFACTURING W indsor Industries has been focused on manufacturing and supplying a wide range of beautifully crafted caskets to the funeral industry throughout New Zealand for over 25 years. The dedicated team are based in Pahiatua, 30km east of Palmerston North. The caskets are made from a variety of timbers, including sustainably sourced pine, featured rimu, heart rimu, knotty macrocarpa, imported sapele mahogany and American oak. Depending on the casket being made, the process from start to finish can take upward of a week to complete. The premium Buckingham solid tim- ber couch range is lovingly handcrafted in mahogany, coloured rimu or oak and is New Zealand’s most elite casket. The company has a strong staff culture of environmental care, team leader Annette Cunningham says. Such is the company’s commitment to environmental care that it is the only casket manufacturer to have received the Environ- mental Choice New Zealand environmental certification, something Annette and her team are very proud of. There’s also a strong emphasis on working efficiently, with an aim to reduce waste to practically zero through the manufacturing process. “Our pine range uses non-toxic stains and glues and we trace the pine back to where it is grown. All pine is purchased from sustainably planted forests. We have held this license for just over a year now and we get audited each year to ensure that we fully comply,” Annette explains. To receive the licence for the Waterford pine range was a rigorous process; the source of the raw materials was investigated and checked to ensure no hazardous substances were used in the processing or included as an ingredient. The processing of the casket is then followed through to ensure that the use of energy consumption is kept to a minimum, no hazardous substances added, and waste is reduced. Feedback is also obtained from customers to ensure that the product meets or exceeds their expectations. T Sue Russell All caskets in the Waterford, Water- ford-Kaimanawa and Dorset ranges are also suitable for use in natural burial cemeteries. In order to meet Natural Burials strict manufacturing standards, all timber is locally sourced and untreated. Along with this, these caskets have few metal fixings, are construct- ed using water-based glues, natural material linings and handles. When a solid timber casket is bought, Windsor Industries gives back to the environ- ment by donating a native tree to be planted in a reserve. So far, it has donated 500 trees through the Trees That Count initiative. “We’re thrilled to be involved in this really worthwhile programme. “It just seems so appropriate that we plant a tree for every solid timber casket manufac- tured. “I think the reason why we have grown to become such a successful business is we put huge emphasis on customer service and con- sistently delivering top quality products. We aim to have 100% customer satisfaction.” Casket manufacturing is a very traditional industry, however what sets Windsor Indus- tries apart is their outlook toward innovation and creativity. To assist with this, the team at Windsor have upgraded to two CNC machines and have a fully customised spray booth and paint mixing system. This enables customised paint finishes to be achieved. “We’re able to produce any colour desired, as well as premium lacquer finishes.” Annette sees a strong and positive future for the company, grown out of a reputation earned through years of delivering consist- ently exceptional standard and service and an innovative team who are always working to create new products.
