CONTRACTING N apier Electrical Engineering company Falcon Electrical was established in 1975 and while that’s a good number of years to be in business, for general manag- er, Mark Phillips, his new role is proving to be exciting and challenging. He joined the company in 2016, when Falcon Electrical had a team of 42 and now oversees 70, alongside Managing Director Richard Phillips. A growth in number and scale he puts down to a much better focus across the company. “We were experiencing strong demand for our services in the industrial sectors, and this led to us really focussing on our brand and how we could deliver the very best outcomes to our clients and further grow our reputa- tion,” Mark says. He says the team today is made up of top quality staff and has the right balance of skills and experience to train apprentices and the graduate engineers, as well as bring on new high skilled employees into the team. “I feel we have only just started on the jour- ney and it is really now about strategising for the long-term.” With phenomenal growth occurring post COVID in the construction sector Mark feels the company is well positioned in terms of its competitors. Falcon Electrical provides a suite of services in the industrial settings, including switch board design, manufacture and installation, automation processes and controls, electrical engineering, contracting and servicing, data infrastructure and surveillance. “We have a strong project management capability which really makes us a complete solutions provider for our industrial clients”. Mark says the whole team has worked hard to establish a very professional standard. “If we are going to be having project manag- ers who say they are the best in the industry then they need to be the best. All our project managers are qualified electrical engineers which is something unique about us,” Mark explains. With so many arms of activity within their realm Mark says its also important that the staff enjoy and environment which is not only challenging but has variety to it. As much as possible staff work in more than one sector of activity and there’s a strong col- laborative approach between the divisions. After 45 years, Mark is convinced the company has only just begun to scratch the surface in terms of its full potential and that with so much construction work underway, the likelihood of Falcon growing larger is very probable. “It’s nice to be involved in a company that is actively seeking more,” is how he puts it. However, managing change isn’t always easy though and Mark admits the hardest challenge for him was to shift a 45 year old business into one with a new-born start-up mentality to it. “Once you have that mindset then the rest falls into place behind it. That’s been our biggest journey to date.” Bringing a more diverse group together as employees is another focus for Mark. When he started the company only had two female apprentices and that number has grown to six across the group’s activities. “We have one staff member who has re- cently qualified as an electrician. “She has been running teams and really thriving as we build the professionalism of our culture. As someone in their early 20’s that’s a great thing to see happening.” The Tricab difference: • Continually improving our products and service • On-site cable manufacture to the highest standards • State of the art Research and Development facility • Premium high-performance and highly flexible cables • Features that save on installation time and costs • Accessories that complement our cables perfectly Auckland 09 887 1051 Wellington 04 887 9908 Christchurch 03 667 9916 www.tricab.com
