88 | Design, craftsmanship a perfect mix T T Karen Phelps A ttention to detail and expert crafts- manship is what makes a brand new home at Horotiu in Hamilton by Grant Stewart Building and designed by Architecto stand out from the rest. Through the use of contrasting materials and high-end finishes, the exterior of the fam - ily home boasts a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. Paul Crawford, principal of Architecto says that extensive due diligence was undertaken to understand what the clients most wanted to see achieved in the design. As the clients had the builder already allocated, Paul could also consult with Grant Stewart and an appointed quantity surveyor to get pricing really nailed down. The section was located down a long driveway and Paul says the journey to the house was a factor in the design. A breezeway entrance brings in the views to achieve drama and outlook. Once inside the home in the central living, kitchen and dining area a feature fireplace takes centre stage. Paul says that the owners Architecto / Grant Stewart Building ARCHITECTURE wanted the outdoor spaces to be prominent in the design of the home and there are a lot of these spaces making the home actually larger than its square metre floor plan. Grant says some high quality materials were integrated throughout the overall design of the house including cedar cladding and Wie- nerberger hand-made bricks sourced through Stellaria and imported from Germany. “Through the grand entranceway, the cedar runs from exterior to interior and lines the in- terior cavity sliders to create a truly seamless look to the entry wall. “Numerous skylights throughout sup- plement the open plan design and large stacker-slider doors that open wide create indoor-outdoor flow and allow space. The house includes a large guest wing, with one all-important function in mind; to cater to extended family and guests who frequent the family home, making this house a space of comfort for all.” Both local businesses offer an extremely personalised service, which added to the overall success of the project. An NZIA regis- tered architect, Paul and wife Azneen, are at the helm of Hamilton boutique architectural design practice Architecto. The company grew from designing a series of renovations for family and friends and over a relatively short period of time has moved to concentrate on designing high-end homes, undertaking design work for a number of community schools, child-care centres and upgrade work for Fire & Emergency NZ. Recent company growth has necessitated that Architecto has moved to dedicated office premises at 298 Barton Street in Hamilton signifying the growth of the company. Staff members have also increased to six. Paul says that Architecto is “extremely busy” working on a range of residential, educational, industrial and mixed-use commercial projects. Grant started Grant Stewart Building in 2008 and the company undertakes a range of projects from new homes to renovations, refurbishments, and extensions. He says they put integrity and client-re- lationships at the forefront of what they do acknowledging that effective collaboration between clients, staff and external contractors provides the perfect foundation for a success- ful and cohesive building process as on this Horotiu project. “We keep the building work in-house and personal so we can guarantee a high standard, and also give our client’s flexibility throughout the build, allowing us to be accom- modating to any modifications or changes the client wants to make along the way. “This is our point of difference and what results in outstanding outcomes such as were achieved on the Horotiu project. We love to see projects come to life, and are proud to present this property as a project that embod- ies the high-standard of workmanship that we consistently strive to achieve.” “Through the grand entranceway, the cedar runs from exterior to interior and lines the interior cavity sliders to create a truly seamless look to the entry wall.” P 07 889 5199 E Email sales@miljoinery.co.nz W miljoinery.co.nz For All Of Your Joinery Needs Design service available | View our showroom!
