The on time delivery of a unique facility in a special location was recently achieved despite the geotechnical challenges of constructing a large building on a lake front. With Sport New Zealand looking to central- ise its training facilities and key infrastructure, Canoe Racing New Zealand was asked to consider Lake Karapiro as a potential site for its high-performance training centre. Once confirmed as suitable location, Sport New Zealand had a list of requirements for the new building, including direct access from the site to the lake for canoes using pontoons, and a boat ramp for the launching of support craft. Waipa District Council and local Iwi were consulted on the identification of the location for the new Canoe Racing New Zealand High Performance Centre. Project architect Chibnall Bucknall Marovic Team Architects were asked to consider the landowners’ request that the building included a strong community component which en- sured the use of the building by local commu- nity organisations. Chibnall Bucknall Marovic Team Architects has worked with Lobell Construction on a number of projects over the past decade and has a good understanding of its capabilities. The contract was put out to market and Sport New Zealand selected Lobell Con- struction, which provided the expertise and resources of a large construction company without the related bureaucracy. When challenges arise, the quality of a com- pany and the people involved really comes to light. Ellyse says tha one of the challenges on this project was managing numerous stakeholders including Sport New Zealand, Canoe Racing New Zealand, Waipa District Council, and local Iwi. Lobell Construction was responsive to stakeholders, navigating council rules, working with Iwi members and facilitating their visits.
