96 | RLC Construction Small team delivers big satisfaction While RLC Construction offers a range of set plans on its website, most of its work is custom-designed. BUILDING T aranaki building firm RLC Construction is proud to be a small business with the ability to focus on customer relations, individual requirements, and ensuring superi- or quality on every single build. RLC Construction founder and director Reuben Christian started his company in 2013, after completing his apprenticeship with BCITO. He says it didn’t take long to learn the importance of strong customer relations and project management, and realise the need for providing a superior service. “We don’t just build houses, we build long-lasting relationships that are fundamen- tal to the success of each of our projects,” Reuben says. “We work alongside our customers to design and build the home they want, to best suit their property and their personal require- ments.” After a year in business, Reuben took on two apprentices, and five years later had grown to three apprentices and two qualified tradesmen. He hasn’t increased his team in the past year, because he wants to keep it small. “Good builders are hard to find, and we just want to keep the quality workmanship in the mid to high-end market we’re in. “Most of our work comes from other cus- tomers referring us on. “Our new customers have liked what they’ve seen, so we want them to know the same people will be working on their project, and they can expect to see the same workmanship in their new home.” T T Kelly Deeks RLC Construction offers a range of set plans on its website, but Reuben says it’s not often we build one of those plans. “All of our work is custom-designed for the client. People will start with one of our plans and re-work it until it completely changes.” A current build for RLC Construction is very close to one of the plans on the website, for clients that where in France locked down and wanted to get there home in Taranaki underway. They were looking for young, local builders to build their new home back home. A ran- dom Google search led to RLC Construction, then recommendations from trusted sources sealed the deal for the client. “We designed the whole house over Zoom meetings,” Reu- ben says. Two years ago Reuben took some time to set up Stop Digging Taranaki, a company supplying, delivering, and installing ground screws for solid foundations. “We always loved the idea of the screw pile foundations under decks and fences and new builds, and support under concrete founda- tions, so we’ve set that up and it’s going along well. A lot of people don’t like changing from what they’ve always done, but once you get them on site everyone is blown away and they use them more and more. “They can focus on their bigger jobs, they don’t even need to be on site while we install these piles with our machines.” RLC Construction uses screw piles under all of its timber decks for the speed and ease of their installation.
