Gisborne: Logic FSL REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT In over two decades of operation, Logic Forest Solutions has established a firm reputation in the Gisborne region for its focus on its people, health, safety, the environment and the local community in which it works. This culminated last year in the company winning the Environment and Sustainability Excellence category in the 2021 Westpac Tairāwhiti Business Excellence Awards. Although Covid-19 has proved challenging for the forestry industry with fluctuating log prices and demand coupled with managing lockdowns, company director Ben Williams says its diversity has helped Logic to weather the storm. It offers a full suite of services to the forestry industry from establishment to management, pruning, thinning, planning, engineering design, GIS mapping and more. “This means if one sector is quiet and another booming we can respond accordingly. We can shift around staff and resources depending on where the demand is, keeping all our team busy at all times.” Currently demand is centred around forest establishment and management on the back of the Emissions Trading Scheme and the One Billion Trees programme. Logic is working for various clients across the region on these types of projects with harvest planning and engineering design work also being particularly busy areas at present. The Logic team is small and tightknit, numbering around ten, and very multi-talented to cope with the company’s diverse work, says Ben. He says that Logic recognises that a large component of its business success relies heavily on the contributions of its staff and the focus is on employing staff with the same values and culture. “We expect them to stay the course in the tough times and share in the reward in the good. We are transparent, open to ideas and improvements and believe work should be enjoyed. We encourage everyone to pursue their passions and support individual growth that supports the company vision,” he says. Health, safety and wellbeing have always been a top priority and Ben says that Logic is committed to pursuing excellence in this area. “The overall goal is that everyone who works within the operation (employees, contractors, sub-contractors, and their service providers) gets home safely at the end of every working day healthy and well.” Initiatives include employees completing the St John’s online mental health in the workplace-training course and the business is also looking to implement an incentive grant to encourage all employees to be active in their own way outside of work, be it contribution to a gym membership or to a sports sub. The company’s clear expertise in the area of health and safety also sees it design and conduct health and safety systems for outside clients including systems/operational audits, Safetree accreditation assistance, environmental field monitoring, aerial drone audits pre and post harvest, contractor pre engagement audits and farm systems audits. Ben says that connecting with and giving back to the communities in which it works is important to Logic’s business success. “We always strive to educate and inform local communities on logging activities in area and facilitate our contractors to have whanau days on their logging site to show families what the industry is about and encourage the next generation. “Other initiatives include random rubbish pickups along country roads and supporting local community groups and organisations either financially or resource wise,” says Ben. Logic is 100% locally owned and is active members of New Zealand Institute of Forestry, the Forest Industry Contractors Association, Safetree, Worksafe East Coast Risk management and Eastland Wood Council. Ben says that over 20 years down the track the company is proud to be a small, hard working team, dedicated to doing a great job.
