88 | ‘Real sense’ of Aotearoa at village from page 86 The joint venture between Metlifecare and Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust has been successful for over 20 years since the village was first established and now 43 new two-bedroom, one-level villas have just been launched to the market. LIFESTYLE Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust The Trust’s presence in Palmerston North is a unique story. The Trust originated through an act of the Crown in 1866. Governor Grey exchanged Te Ātiawa land interests in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt, with a block of land, which is now part of central Palmerston North. Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust trustees and owners acknowledge Rangitāne as mana whenua. Today the Trust’s presence in Palmerston North spans multiple businesses including a Mitre10, Countdown, student accommodation and a childcare centre. Liz says the business ventures have enabled the Trust to provide work opportunities and positive economic, environment and social outcomes. In the case of Metlifecare Palmerston North Villas it has enabled closer connection of Maori cultural values with the residents. For example manaakitanga, a mara kai (food garden), Maori weaving courses and planting of native trees on the site. “We bring a real sense of Aotearoa where people mix and mingle together and learn from each other.” www.solidscaff.co.nz 021 494 159 enquiries@solidscaff.co.nz Platform Scaffolding, Edge Protection & Safety Nets SAFE • HONEST • RELIABLE RibRaft & Engineered Foundation Specialists We’d love to work along-side you on your next project, lets chat!
