94 | Increase in operating capacity from page 93 COMMUNITY Kaweka Health Owned by Westside Healthcare, private investment has seen the project commence rapidly. When completed Kaweka Health will provide a significant increase to the Hawke’s Bay’s current operating capacity, delivering 5000-7000 additional operations each year. Colin says that the name for the facility, which was kindly gifted by Ngahiwi Tōmoana of Ngāti Kahungunu iwi, was taken from the Kaweka ranges, a prominent geological feature of Hawke’s Bay that envelops and protects the region and its people fitting in well with the vision for the facility, which has an aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Hawke’s Bay. “It means that operations can be done at the right time and at the right place, so Hawke’s Bay people don’t face long delays or are forced to go outside of the region for much needed surgical care. Our aim is to treat people quicker so that they have the opportunity to return to living a better quality of life and, in many instances, getting back to work.” Kaweka Health has also announced a joint venture with The Eye Institute and Colin says the collaboration brings together the largest group of eye surgeons in Hawke’s Bay. It is the first of several announcements on specialist clinician services to be established at the facility. “We’re thrilled to partner with The Eye Institute and have their well respected local eye surgeons taking residence at Kaweka Hospital. We are creating the most technologically advanced surgical hospital in Hawke’s Bay and it is important that we have leaders in specialist surgical fields such as eye care.” When completed Kaweka Health will provide a significant increase to the Hawke’s Bay’s current operating capacity, delivering 5000-7000 additional operations each year.
