102 | Modular barn frames Heritage Timbercraft designs a range of modular barn frames and home plans for the New Zealand market. SECTION Heritage Timbercraft T T Hugh de Lacy Wanting to establish a bread-andbutter line of timber frames for new houses led to Heritage Timbercraft designing a range of modular barn frames and home plans for the New Zealand market. Heritage Timbercraft also offers home plans incorporating barns built in the 18th and 19th centuries in the United States. These barn frames form the structural framework and architectural feature of the home, with the large beams joined with big mortise and tenon joints and held together with oak pegs. Based on a farm on the Napier-Taupo road called Mohaka River Farms, adjoining the river of that name in northern Hawke’s Bay, Heritage Timbercraft has provided trusses or full frames for close to a hundred homes using timber sourced from throughout the country and overseas, and processed at its own onfarm sawmill and workshop. The company was founded in 2015 by Ralph Lattimore, who’s one of four owners, building on his 20-odd years of experience in the industry. Ralph now runs a separate business, Mohaka River Timber, that sources standing trees from around Hawke’s Bay, and mills and processes beams and other feature timbers for clients around the country. The Heritage Timbercraft team has developed a range of modular timber frame designs to circumvent the usual delays and modifications in one-off projects. With about 40 tested frame designs to choose from, and almost 50 pre-designed house plans, the range caters to clients wanting townhouses, cottages, family homes, event venues and accommodation. All the home plans can be customised to meet the client’s site and needs. Today Heritage Timbercraft is a specialist timber-framing company sourcing timber from small South Island sawmills, and from partner heritage building companies in the United States. Heritage Restorations in the US, and companies such as Ohio Valley Barn Salvage, locate old barns, dismantle them, and ship the timber to Heritage Timbercraft in New Zealand which has a staff of seven including the three directors, Jared Wayman, Peter Macfarlane and Freek Hogendoorn. Jared, with his experience in the building industry, is in charge of marketing, and his focus is on establishing a nationwide network of builders who love the product and want to complete the build around beautiful barn frames. Heritage Timbercraft is offering builders the support of its design team as well as marketing material to promote their own local brand. Freek, a Dutchman with a background in timber processing and joinery, runs the onfarm workshop and leads the team raising barn frames around the country. For clients with a large budget who want something truly unique, Heritage Timbercraft offers reclaimed oak barn frames incorporated into modern homes designs. “We take care of the whole design process, including engineering and building consent applications, and have worked with councils all over New Zealand.” That warm feeling of pride and comfort when you drive through your gateway for the first time should last forever.
