Precision Building & Maintenance BUILDING In less than a year, Precision Building & Maintenance has carved a solid niche in its home province of Taranaki. Owned and run by qualified builder Jared Coombes, the Hawera-based business has been specialising in renovations and is now an agent for Streamline carports. It is also working as a subcontractor to Auckland firm, Cassidy Construction, on Powerco substation projects. Jared launched Precision Building & Maintenance July last year with 11 years trade experience behind him, having previously worked for a company that undertook a lot of renovations. Starting his own business was “was basically the next step,” Jared says. Precision Building & Maintenance employs one other person who is an apprentice and has had a solid workload, especially with higher interest rates meaning some people have chosen to renovate rather than move upmarket or to build. Jared enjoys renovations because the challenges involved means the work is less predictable that conventional new builds. “Every day is so different. You never know what you’re up for and just making old look new; it’s just satisfying.” Best-value renovations include bathrooms, adding a deck or converting a space into a man cave or kids den, Jared says. One project Jared has ahead is converting a 35 square metre shed into a self-contained unit. “I guess that’s a good example of, instead of upsizing or building new or whatever, they can do it with what they’ve got and expand on their space.” During the initial consultation, Jared was able to provide valuable advice about what was feasible and whether the project was financially realistic. To comply with the building code as a habitable building, the floor level will need to be increased by 100mm. This will be possible because of the shed’s existing nib wall that can have concrete poured within it, while the existing wall and roof framing and roughcast cladding can remain. “We will beef up the roof rafters for the new roof, place insulation and gib it and put in some power points and it will be quite a cool space.” The renovation adds a lot a value to the home both for functionality and resale while the same principle applies to the Streamline carports as a simple, quick-to-build and inexpensive solution to providing vehicle shelter. The carports incorporate PurlinDek, a cold rolled steel sheet with a six metre wide load-bearing span capability in their construction. This patented profile is exclusive to Streamline carports and requires fewer purlins, fewer fixings and less labour and, being aesthetically pleasing, they look great against any new or existing house or structure. “It’s a good product to add to our portfolio because I think they are quite an affordable extra vehicle space.” Being subcontracted to the Powerco projects is a great endorsement for Precision Building & Maintenance, Jared says. He is always up for expanding his company’s skill base and this is his company’s first commercial project, less than a year since it was established. “We have been part of the Opunake substation project and now Hawera. That’s been awesome.” “Every day is so different. You never know what you’re up for and just making old look new; it’s just satisfying.” Congratulations to Precision Building on a successful first year NEW HOMES • RENOVATIONS • MAINTENANCE PLUMBING • GAS FITTING • DRAINAGE
