Wellington Business Awards: Morden REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT An innovative Lower Hutt-based company that supports large-scale construction projects has received recognition for its work at the regional business awards. Morden, a three-year old start-up company, works on projects nationally, specialising in programming and planning, project management, cost, and construction management. It was nominated in three categories at the 2degrees Wellington Business Awards – best small business, excellence in service, and excellence in construction. Director and general manager Dave Morris said being a relatively new start-up among venerated companies was an honour. “We were thrilled to be nominated for all three categories we entered.” “The team felt privileged to be recognised. It’s also testament to how we support our clients to achieve their goals.” “We didn’t think we should enter because we felt we were still starting our journey. However, upon reflection, we entered.” Dave is proud of the team that has been, and still is being built. Along with a continually growing client base. “We have worked on some amazing projects for a company of our size. Becoming the consultant of choice, we are firmly established as the team that provides results..” While its core business is in the Wellington region, the company has projects in Auckland, Christchurch, the Upper South Island, Coromandel, and in the Hawke’s Bay. Morden has been engaged on numerous projects across all sectors of the industry. The scope and scale of these have ranged from $1.5b infrastructure projects to $50k residential upgrades. Recently they were employed to assist with the Rydges Hotel seismic upgrade in Wellington. “It was a very challenging project that required Morden’s specialist skillset to construct a detailed completion programme that clearly showed the most efficient path to completion,” Dave said. A key challenge was excavation below the lift pits and main shear walls. “It was mining beneath a 12-story building and that is no easy task. The temporary propping alone was beyond anything done before in Wellington. Building a new foundation system literally under the building was a testament to the skill of the contractors involved.” “The goal was to provide a programme challenging the incumbent process and ensuring it was as robust as possible to allow them to construct the foundation as quickly as possible, it was simply a critical component of the project.” Morden brought to the table its construction experience and knowledge of the local subcontractor and supplier market. “(We have) lots of experience on seismic projects in Wellington. We also leveraged our years of experience in planning and programming to help the team navigate through the challenges of the design and buildability.” Morden assists principals, main contractors, developers, and subcontractors work through the challenges of construction management as well as being the fence at the top and the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. “The best time to get Morden involved is from conception. Our experience helps the entire team become one.” He said New Zealand needed to focus on resilience within its building stock. “For too long buildings have been designed and built considering the short term. For our industry to be sustainable we need to contemplate the whole life cycle of buildings. “Thinking about easier maintenance and ultimately their demolition, designs will mature, and construction innovation will be brought to the forefront.” “We have worked on some amazing projects for a company of our size....” • Free Quotes • New Roofs • Re-Roofs • Asbestos Removal • Wall Cladding • Spouting • Butynol • Torch-on • Tanking Contact Jon Lucas 021 0233 3306 • info@grandsroofing.co.nz Proud to be associated with Morden New Zealand Certi ed Builders Association CB At PBJ, we are dedicated to the craft of building.
