30 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Scafit Ltd: SARNZ 2023 Awards T T Karen Phelps Staff development focus for company The Scafit team with the Scaffolding, Access and Rigging New Zealand (SARNZ) Training Company of the Year award. Palmerston North and Wanganui based scaffolding company Scafit is all about people. This has led Scafit to place a huge focus on the development of its team, which has won it the 2023 Scaffolding, Access and Rigging New Zealand (SARNZ) Training Company of the Year award for the second time. The business also has ISO 45001 accreditation, SiteWise Gold and SARNZ Gold accreditation. It is the first scaffolding company in the world to obtain BCorp Certification for businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency further underscoring Scafit’s commitment to operating a business that benefits people, communities and the planet. “We want to have a business that helps our team, as well as being a business that is a success financially,” says Scafit managing director David Crowley who owns the company with wife Nicki. “If we can get our staff motivated to push ahead in their careers it builds better people, better community and ultimately a better business.” With offices in Palmerston North and Wanganui, the Crowleys say Scafit prioritises personal growth for each of the 60 team members with the ultimate vision to cultivate high performing successful teams and individuals who excel in their roles while embodying values that earn respect. To achieve this Scafit has formulated a comprehensive training approach encompassing both hard and soft skills. The Scafit training model incorporates three key components: inspiring motivation and purpose through clear goals, fostering a culture of continuous growth and support for the team and helping grow self-awareness of emotional intelligence to be the next leaders within the industry creating more sustainability and better behaviours. The business embraces a 70:20:10 model for learning and personal development, which serves as the cornerstone of individualised training programs. The Crowleys says that this approach prioritises a dynamic learning process, with 70% of learning occurring on the job, 20% through coaching and mentorship from peers and the remaining 10% through formal education and specialised courses. For Scafit that 10% comprises its apprenticeship and leadership programme and the fundamental hard skill courses. However the Crowleys say the real growth happens on the job, where individuals can freely explore, make mistakes without fear of blame and learn more in the process. “The real accelerator is the guidance provided by our managers and leaders throughout the organisation,” says Nicki. “ They play a pivotal role in offering valuable coaching, constructive feedback, and encouragement. Our focus on team leadership at every level is what drives the culture of continuous learning within our organisation. This culture of learning empowers our teams to achieve their goals and fosters an environment where effective, productive, and enjoyable teamwork thrives.” Hard skills training involve both external and internal delivery and Scafit collaborates with industry providers for core unit standards and advanced safety training. The Scafit Skills Pathway is a point of difference and showcases internal modules, offering skill development, competency assessments, and recognition of achievements. “Our aim is to support all staff to develop their skills to the level and speed they want to reach. We provide a combination of internal and external learning opportunities to develop their skills and progress their career,” says Nicki. “We have organised the learning opportunities into groups of training modules and external courses, starting from 100-level T T to page 32 through to 600-level. Every member of the Scafit family, no matter what position, will complete modules along this pathway starting from their very first day with Scafit. The path isn’t one-way only, so it doesn’t have to be completed in this order. Everybody’s journey will be different and at a different pace.” Each staff member is expected to have a plan for continuous personal development with employees responsible for driving their progress at their own pace. As employers Scafit takes responsibility for offering support, coaching and guidance on how to achieve these goals. verticalhorizonz.com info@vhnz.co.nz 0800 72 33 848 Grow your business with a qualified workforce.
