Waiopehu College - Mark Hyndman Construction REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Mark Hyndman Construction Ltd, led by Horowhenua builder Mark Hyndman, specialises in revitalising the infrastructure of Levin’s secondary and primary educational institutions. Mark’s expertise shines through in the transformation of Waiopehu College’s aging structures, some of which date back over half a century. In preparation for the 2024 academic year, Mark undertook a significant overhaul, converting a multi-purpose building into a state-of-the-art dance studio tailored to meet Waiopehu College’s evolving needs. “The building had a lot of issues,” says Waiopehu College principal Guy Reichenbach. “It had previously been a common room, an indoor cricket pavilion and a PE classroom.” It had windows that didn’t open or close properly, a hole in the floor and a disused kitchen.” “Now it’s a light and airy dance space,” says Guy, “A fit for purpose rebuild from Mark who has transformed many spaces for our college.” The building upgrades were much needed and well received giving students a learning environment they want to spend time in. The college was designed in 1968 using the ‘S68’ design and built in 1973, as were many other New Zealand schools says the principal, many of these schools are now experiencing, the same leaking issues we are, which was due to a design flaw. Work involving water damage repair and re-roofing, to change flat roofs for pitched, will be put out for tender by the college, later this year. “Our gym foyer, auditorium foyer and administration block are all leaking, so they are in dire need of re-roofing.” Repairing water damage was a part of the restoration works Mark Hyndman Construction completed on the gymnasium over the Christmas school holidays. “This was the nicest transformation,” says Mark. “The bottom half of the walls were repainted and Autex acoustic panels were installed along the top.” Waiopehu College learning support office was also given a much-needed upgrade earlier this year, improving usability and brightening the interior. “”Refreshing the whole office,” says Guy, “means our students are far more willing to engage, because they’re going into a really lovely space.” The college has an upgrade to an ablution block also on the cards and a few other bits and pieces says Mark, who is currently completing a building upgrade at Horowhenua College including converting an old canteen into a working commercial kitchen. Mark is a former student of Horowhenua College, now a licensed building practitioner and site safe member. “I’ve been building since I left high school at 16 pretty much,” says Mark. “I offer a residential and light commercial renovation service and the occasional new home build.” Mark Hyndman Construction’s transformative initiatives not only rejuvenate physical structures but also invigorate the educational landscape, ensuring that students have access to modern, inspiring learning environments conducive to their growth and success.
