Diesel Mechanical Repairs T T Rosa Watson AUTOMOTIVE Starting out with just a ute, a man, and tools eight years ago, Taranaki couple Darcy and Emma Redstone’s heavy machinery repair business has gone from strength to strength. The couple started Inglewood-based Diesel Mechanical Repairs (DMR) in 2017 with a simple operation. “We looked at options of buying another business and the numbers did not quite stack up” Emma explains. So, they decided to start a business from scratch. Darcy had been a mechanic since he was a teenager and Emma had worked in offices since leaving school. “We are a hardworking, down to earth couple. Growing up in rural King Country where no is not an option. We have a think outside the box attitude with a hands-on approach. Having Emma in the office is key to running a smooth operation with day to day running and Emma will also chuck on some overalls and get out in the workshop to complete a deadline” D’Arcy said. “We started off with a ute and building our customer base, contracting in when required. It wasn’t long before they hired an employee and purchased a second ute. “We’ve expanded from there, with hard work, transparency, and honesty.” They moved into their current premises four years ago and now have three full-time employees on the team. Their work takes them across Taranaki to Mt Messenger and beyond, along with other areas in the Taranaki “boondocks”. “We normally travel 60 to 100 kilometres from the workshop.” Inglewood was a handy location for the region, Emma said. We’ve tried to stay centralised in a sense. We’ve had opportunities to have the workshop in Bell Block (17km away), but it just pushes us too far away from the Inglewood community which has been a great support to our business. Clients include local company Burgess Crowley Civil, Ian George, Bunn Contracting, North Taranaki ITM and local forestry operations, as well as individual operators. The majority of their work is heavy machinery such as diggers and bulldozers, as well as trucks and forklifts. They are also Central Group agent selling Takeuchi excavators and Heli Forklifts Taranaki-wide. One of D’Arcy’s highlights is selling top spec Takeuchi equipment and setting them up to exceed customers’ expectations. “Watching a grown man turn into an excited little boy when they take ownership of their new machine makes me proud knowing they have the best toy in the sandpit”, said D’Arcy. Our goal is to provide a personal service at a professional level. Understanding each customers business and challenges providing tailored services to compliment the industry. With Darcy’s 26 years’ experience across the industry, he has a confident and positive approach to every job and their services include engine repairs, regular maintenance, brake repairs, light engineering track and roller repair and transmission repairs, and have a 24-hour call-out service with two fully equipped callout vehicles ready to go at any time. “Our workshop foreman has had 40 years in the game in trouble shooting and diagnostics. So, he’s really technical with heavy machinery and how that all works.” Hiring the right staff is important to DMR, Emma said. “We have a great team with lots of knowledge and as the trades go it can be quite a technical trade, so finding guys with the right brains to do the work is always challenging”. They participate in the Gateway programme out of Inglewood High School, which is where their current apprentice came from. It was important to give young people the experience in the trade, she said.
