ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AD Architecture / Mike Craig Builders His own high-performance home on the Kapiti Coast has received high praise from industry peers. The energy efficient, high performance 177m2 home at Paraparaumu Beach, built for Peter Davis of AD Architecture, was named as a finalist in the 2024 SuperHome of the Year awards. The project was a collaboration between his firm and Mike Craig Builders. Peter and Mike have worked together on many projects since Peter moved to the Kapiti Coast in 1988, both learning and developing their craft over that time. The home was a combination of talents and passions, Peter said. “The new home designed especially for my wife, and I is culmination of energy efficient, healthy, and sustainable design that we wanted to explore, along with accessibility and resilience with a semi-industrial aesthetic. “Mike understands high performance and passive house design, so the relationship, expertise and ability to manage the project made it a natural fit.” The budget was $850,000, but post Covid supply chain issues pushed this out by 20 per cent. “Thankfully building costs are stabilising again now, although still extremely high by international standards.” Peter said a high-performance home focused on achieving the best energy efficient, healthy, resilient, and sustainable design for a new house within the client’s budget and brief and house location. “The New Zealand Building Code levels are often seen as the desired target, but they are actually only mandatory minimum standards which we think are really important to exceed, without necessarily going to the expense or compromise of a fully passive house.” He said the firm was motivated to enter the awards to showcase how a SuperHome can be achieved, and to generate publicity around its ability to deliver these homes for potential clients. AD Architecture was a participant in the SuperHome movement from the beginning and assisted in the publication of the SuperHome Design guide. “SuperHome is an inspiring resource for educating professionals, builders, and homeowners on the importance of building high performance homes that will improve the health of its inhabitants while also being more energy efficient, resilient to natural disasters and last longer.” AD Architecture was formed in 2008 as an amalgamation of two already established practices – Peter Davis Architecture and Jona Architectural design. Peter said the team worked on a variety of projects, mostly mid to high-end new residential homes and apartments, but also house alterations, retirement villages, light commercial, retail, and community facilities. The team has fluctuated between seven and 15 people, with some core personnel that have been with the firm from the beginning. He said one of the biggest changes in the industry over the years was compliance requirements increasing dramatically for the last 20 years. “And that doesn’t seem about to change any time soon.” Highlights had been growing the practice to provide meaningful employment and entering and winning multiple times at the ADNZ design awards and Master Builders House of the Year Awards. Standout projects for the team have been the Kapiti Coast Hockey pavilion - a world class facility completed on a shoestring budget – building their own homes and producing the David Reid Homes plan range. “We also are proud of our membership and contribution to Architectural Designers NZ (ADNZ).” He hoped to see AD Architecture continue to be a leader and advocate for high performance design.
