South Taranaki’s largest ever residential development, Longview, Hāwera, is striking a harmonious chord in the market. Veros development manager, Scott Bicknell, highlights the project’s goal of offering affordable housing with amenities on a 30-hectare site. Aimed at families, retirees and those seeking a lifestyle change, Longview features a mix of lot sizes and house types. “Longview arose out of the need for a master-planned development that offers an affordable price point with excellent amenities,” Scott says. The development, managed by Veros and envisioned by local couple Brenda and Paul Schrader, plans to complete 259 new homes in five stages. So far, 42 out of 62 lots in stages one and two have sold, driven by strong demand when the first lots were released in 2021 during a low-interest environment. “We aimed to deliver competitive price points, filling the gap between existing stock and high-end properties,” he says. Longview’s master plan includes five new streets, green corridors, cycle trails, and pedestrian access to the town, complemented by new infrastructural projects like a library and an arts and cultural centre. Integrated wetlands and revegetated streams with walkways enhance the development’s stormwater and drainage infrastructure. “Stage one was a great success, providing high public amenities and quality homes at a good price point through well-considered designs on various section sizes.” The development has attracted buyers from Auckland and major centres like New Plymouth, drawn by the promise of a lower-cost lifestyle. Buyers can opt to purchase a section and build independently or choose from house and land packages offered by trusted local building companies. These companies ensure high standards and ease the stress of the design, consenting, and build process, allowing for personalisation. Design guidelines are in place to maintain the high quality of homes and protect property values. Situated among coastal and mountain scenery with Mt. Taranaki as a backdrop, Longview offers a semi-rural setting with the convenience of New Plymouth and Whanganui within an hour’s drive. Hāwera’s appeal goes beyond just its scenic beauty. The town, with a population of over 10,000, offers a provincial lifestyle characterised by a strong sense of community and a robust local economy. Key industries such as oil, gas, and dairy farming, notably with the presence of a Fonterra factory, contribute significantly to the town’s economic stability. The support from government investments and infrastructural projects further bolster Hāwera’s resilience. “Longview will continue as planned, supporting the area’s growth and providing new housing options.” Brenda and Paul Schrader take personal pride in the development, ensuring it remains tidy and well-maintained. “They care deeply about the community being created.” The Schrader’s commitment is evident as they personally attend to the maintenance of the development, from mowing lawns to weeding, reflecting their dedication to the project and its future residents. The current phase focuses on designing the remaining stages, with additional releases planned for the near future. T he development promises to continue providing high-quality housing options, contributing to the growth and vibrancy of Hāwera.
