PROUDLY NZ OWNED “And so we’re seeing the emergence of pet insurance programmes, and we have access to finance programmes. Our job is not to make any judgements on what an owner’s decision is but to present those options to people. And you never judge a book by its cover in terms of how a person thinks about their pet. “People who you might think the most unlikely have a huge amount of care and empathy for doing the right thing by their pet.” Total Vets Equine services includes everything from providing compliance support at race day, through to dealing with the health and welfare of an individual horse — be that preventative programmes with vaccines right through to ambulatory work. “Our lifestyle work tends to be more at the companion animal end of the spectrum, in that lifestyle owners may not necessarily have the full understanding of what’s involved in keeping sheep or cattle, and look for advice. “They also have a strong empathy for doing the right thing. For example, they become very concerned if there’s facial eczema in their sheep and will call for assistance, looking for programmes they can follow.” Across the two clinics Totally Vets employs 100 staff, including vets, farm technicians, veterinary nurses, front line support staff and management roles. “People who work in the animal industry have a passion for it, feel good about the work they are doing. Our whole purpose is to provide expertise and care and there’s a good feeling about being a helpful cog in that wheel, be it to a pet owner, farmer or horse owner.”
