Schurr & Ireland are proud to support NZ Forestry “It’s about having professional forest management services with local professionals from our team producing exceptional results for our clients. We are judged by our results.” Through the various age classes of the trees, this involves planting, spraying, pruning, thinning and eventually harvesting to achieve the best possible outcome. A growing part of the rotational management is managing carbon credits and carbon yields, which provide revenue outside of purely harvesting and this has changed rotational forestry’s economics. NZF is Forest Stewardship Council certified to manage forests to international environmental standards. The company has developed strict policies and procedures it operates under to protect wildlife habitat and species and to preserve high-conservation-value forests. While the industry has received a lot of negative publicity around the issue of forestry waste, (slash) a lot is happening behind the scenes to look at ways of reducing it, Cam says. There are huge opportunities to use the waste or convert it into biomass which can be a source of fuel and there are also considerable opportunities for cross laminated timber to be utilised more widely in construction instead of steel for structural elements. “It really seems to be a large part of our future; to make good really good cross laminated beams we need to be producing the right logs, so when we are setting up an investment for a forest, we are looking at what market is likely to take those logs in 25 years’ time. “Our part in that place is how do we prepare the logs best to be purchased by those cross laminate producers, so our clients’ forests are in demand for future domestic and export markets. “For us, we are really excited about forestry and its future because the world is waking up to wood.” While forestry can be a very good investment, like any investment it needs to be well understood and people need to know what drives the revenues and costs that lead to the result., Cam says. “It’s sometimes a misunderstood land use, but landowners with the proper advice can do very well out of forestry. A lot of our clients have achieved amazing success with land that is marginal for farming.” Following a recent growth period, NZF is currently open to taking on more clients. “If you’re thinking about forestry as an investment or you own a forest and would like to talk to us, get in touch with us.” “For us, we are really excited about forestry and its future because the world is waking up to wood.” businesscentral Each edition priority delivered to your door. .
