Ardern Peters Architects are shortlisted for this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards for their new classroom block at Puketapu Primary School in New Plymouth. The classroom block provides four new classrooms within the one building with the agility to open the classrooms up into two larger learning spaces or eight smaller sections with a central gathering space between. Ardern Peters Architects director, Glen Robinson says the school received roll growth funding from the Ministry of Education for four new classrooms after the school roll exploded on the back of new housing developments in the Bell Block area in North New Plymouth. “The challenge was to make the new building sympathetic to the rest of the school and to achieve this on a tight budget. “We used a series of gable forms arranged in a symmetrical configuration to create connectivity to the surrounding environment from each teaching space. This also helped increase efficiencies and keep costs down.” “The intentionally steep pitched roof forms are not only a sympathetic response to the surrounding buildings but are also a nod to traditional Marae construction. The Whare form represents what the school is about – A whanau group, under one roof,” says Glen.
