T T from page 62 Ardern Peters Architects ARCHITECTURE The use of sliding doors between teaching spaces and breakouts creates an adaptable floor plan catering for collaborative group learning as well as the ability to split into single teaching cells with breakout spaces for smaller group learning. Colour is used to define the classrooms with one side of the building in green, representing whenua, or land, and the opposite side in blue, representing moana, or ocean. The school engaged a local artist to design the formal entry doors to incorporate something specific to their community. The custom Puhoro Kowhaiwhai design etched in glass brings together the flowing of wind and moana. The Koiri design is also integrated through the interior to represent the hapu’s past, whakapapa and a waka to help empower all. “We like to take a collaborative approach to our projects, and work with our clients and this build was designed with input from the school, hapū and community. “The people who have needed this extra space for very long time were particularly invested in the process. They are the most appreciative clients that you can get.” “We’re very approachable people and I think that’s what makes us stand out as an architecture firm. We work closely with a number of schools but provide an individualised service that is specific to their own Kaupapa. My wife is a teacher, I’m on the school board and my kids are at school so I’m fairly entrenched in the education sector!” he says. Ardern Peters Architects was established in 2000 and has grown to become one of the larger architectural practices in Taranaki, employing 13 staff including the four directors. As architects in a regional city, they are adaptable and work across a variety of project typologies, as the population is too small to support specialists in just one area. The firm evenly divides its portfolio into thirds: commercial, education and residential. St Joseph’s School Stratford Redevelopment is another education project by the company that has been shortlisted for the 2023 NZ Architects Award. Ardern Peters Architects has been recognised by the Ministry of Education who has appointed them to the Construction Professional Services panels for 10 Year Property Plans, and Project Management Panels for Taranaki and Waikato regions, as well the emergency contractor consultant in Taranaki. “The people who have needed this extra space for very long time were particularly invested in the process.” Proudly working with Ardern Peters Architects Get a free quote from the floor specialists!
