ARCHITECTURE Edwards White Architects has had six projects short listed in the 2023 Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards. One of Edwards White’s directors Daniel Smith says it has been a huge privilege to be involved in delivering these key projects to the region: Hamilton Zoo and Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park Entry Precinct, Vantage, Screened Gables, Panorama, Manning Street and Deep Cover. Daniel says that the Hamilton Zoo and Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park project presented the opportunity to significantly improve the visibility and identity of the destination. Collaborating with Wraight and Associates and Designwell, Edwards White Architects created an inviting entry building that is complementary to the surrounding landscape, connecting people with wildlife and biodiversity experiences in a safe and welcoming environment. “It’s quite an impactful project for the city in terms of tourism,” says Daniel. “The aim was to solidify them as one of Kirikiriroa’s key tourist destinations.” A townhouse project on Manning Street emphasises Edwards White Architects’ diverse capabilities. Daniel says that while infill housing often succumbs to pressure to sacrifice design quality in favour of higher development margins, Manning Street presented an opportunity to strive for better design. “By designing to an architectural standard that is attractive and appealing to potential residents. We hope this development can help revitalise Hamilton city.” Vantage Apartments in Tauranga CBD further emphasises this point. The mixed-use development offers a destination to live, work and play. Daniel says that through mixed-use intensification adjacent to public transport, this development seeks to provide a model for the revitalisation of the central city in Tauranga. “Ground-floor tenancies stimulate street life and allow apartments to be raised above the traffic. The design seeks to maintain a balance of privacy and sociability allowing opportunities for different activities to mingle. The location provides easy access to alternative modes of transport so occupants can enjoy a less car dependant lifestyle.” The Deep Cover cricket pavilion in Tamahere was both quirky and different, says Daniel. “It’s a multi-use cricket pavilion built for private clients on the outskirts of Hamilton City. The clients wanted an open and playful space that they could share with friends and the local community, without encroaching on the privacy of their family home,” he explains. Set against bush and just a short walk from a private Waikato River beach, the building was designed to complement its surroundings while maintaining an identity of its own. The result is Deep Cover is a peaceful retreat for recreation, entertainment and connection. Demonstrating its capabilities in the residential sector, the Panorama project, a holiday home in Coromandel shows Edwards White Architects’ ability to deliver a unique space created through elements of surprise and adventure. Screened Gables, a home in Hamilton, further accentuates this point generating a building of clean lines and elemental forms for a tranquil family sanctuary. Multi award winning practice Edwards White Architects began in 2005 and has studios in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. It offers a comprehensive architectural service, extending from the macro level of master planning to the tactile experience of intimate interior spaces. “This year’s shortlisted projects show we’re a diverse practice and represent the quality of our work. We’re a design led practice and we believe architecture should be accessible to anyone. The public projects in our city are especially satisfying and so purposeful.” 021 625 478 o ice@wireit.net.nz www.wireit.net.nz Proudly supporting Edwards White Architects !
