BUILDING As Palmerston North grows so has the high-end luxury market and Wayne Adam Builders continues to build its reputation for completing successful quality builds for discerning clients. Company owner Wayne Adam says business is busy with strong forward bookings including a home that is partially off the grid and utilising passive house principles. The 250sqm home designed by Emerge Architecture has its own water supply, solar panels and batteries for excess energy storage. The next home booked in with the team will be in Foxton Beach for one of the owners of Emerge Architecture as testament to the skills of the Wayne Adam Builders team. Wayne says people can get real bang for their buck in Palmerston North compared to the larger main centres, which he suspects may be a contributing factor driving the luxury home market in the region including a recently completed project in Palmerston North that was inspired by Wayne Adam Builders’ Master Builders House of the Year 2021 gold award winning house. Also designed by Emerge Architecture, the home is double storey using a combination of Otago schist and pre-finished aluminium cladding. Wayne started his company about eight years ago and before that worked for a builder for 20 years who focused on highend builds. Wayne cut his teeth on quality workmanship and these skills have stood him in good stead as he says his clients demand the very best. Much work is by word of mouth and Wayne Adam Builders works on new homes, alterations, renovations and outdoor landscaping projects. The small dedicated team – Wayne, another qualified builder and an apprentice – focus on one project at a time. It’s part of the company’s secret to delivering such high quality projects on time and on budget. Wayne says high-end homes are more challenging; something the team thrives on, due to more detailed design and often the use of unique materials. Working with Emerge Architecture has proved a fruitful relationship and together the two companies have produced some outstanding builds including the 2021 House of the Year competition home that generated a lot of interest after receiving numerous accolades in the Manawatu/Whanganui district in the category of Resene New Home over $2 Million. In addition to a gold award, the 387m2 home received an outdoor living excellence award, won its category, and was selected as part of the Top 100 group. Wayne says it was a significant project taking 18 months. The owners wanted a home that would provide private spaces for relaxation, ample room for guests to socialize together or find solitude, and plenty of space to display their cherished art collection, including a bronze memorial sculpture. The combination of Otago schist and pre-finished aluminium cladding perfectly complemented the artwork as does the entrance gallery made of stone leading to the open, bright, and airy interior. The house also boasts four spacious bedrooms, multiple living areas, a media room, and an office/yoga room. Despite its expansive layout, the floor plan seamlessly connects each space to the next. Schist also abounds on the inside of the home, adding texture and a unique point of difference to the home as well as demonstrating true craftsmanship to deliver a quality end result. Wayne says that the House of the Year awards were a real tribute to the skills of the team at Wayne Adam Builders. He has only entered the competition once before in the early days of his company and won a bronze that time securing his place as a multi award-winning local builder.
