BUILDING Building with concrete increases the efficiency of projects, reducing build time frames and resulting in an incredibly resilient end result. This is why Homestead Construction has chosen to specialise in this type of building method and why it’s been the builder of choice on two large projects recently completed for Gillies Group. One was a project for the redevelopment of the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport in Upper Hutt constructing the new Athletes Village. This included 50 short-stay accommodation units in seven blocks and the shared amenities building that provides a central social space for those staying in the Athletes Village. It was in 2019 Homestead Construction was approached by Gillies Group regarding a design and build project. Homestead Construction Design Coordinator Paulette Stewart says that Gillies Group had already had a concept design done and so Homestead Construction worked off that to form the project brief. In an early contractor involvement scenario Homestead Construction managed the design process, engaging all the consultants to get the project to a consentable stage. Paulette Stewart says that concrete was an obvious material of choice as there were a number of existing concrete structures already on the site and it enabled the new development to tie in seamlessly. Each of the units is self-contained with two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and living area. This includes units customised for higher accessibility, and hypoxic units for athletes doing low oxygen training. The amenities building has a large social space, small commercial kitchen, bathrooms and breakout spaces. Forward planning and procuring materials upfront helped the project to progress smoothly even in the tight material supply market during the pandemic. This as also assisted by the fact that Homestead Construction manufactured the precast concrete panels as its purpose-built manufacturing facility in Levin. Paulette says the scale of the overall project meant that Homestead Construction had to work in with other projects and contractors on the site. “There was a lot of other development taking place on the site with some under design and still being resolved while we were T T Work Base Project - page 80 on site. Roads were closing and opening and new buildings popping up. The site also has tenants and is fully operational so we had to work in with that. It was a very dynamic site and we had to keep in close communication with site management for the entire campus,” she explains. The Homestead Construction project took 18 months to deliver and was handed over in February and Paulette says it demonstrates how Homestead Construction can meet its commitments, despite challenges such as Covid-19 lockdowns and inclement weather, to deliver on time and on budget. d, please draft the ad for us to revi w. pg and .png formats, 3 versions actice’ logo, two versions following: th of ad Athlete’s Villa e accommodation and amenities buildings at NZCIS 04 384 3132 www.wrightgray.co.nz Architects for the Athletes Village accommodation and amenities buildings at NZCIS.
