Last year was a significant milestone for Paraparaumu family-owned business Orchard Joinery, a trusted name in custom kitchens and bespoke timber joinery across the Kāpiti Coast and Wellington regions for over 30 years. Geoff Orchard began his journey in 1990 at McIntyre Joinery and became a partner by the end of 1991, forming McIntyre and Orchard Joinery. In 1994, Geoff and his wife Christine took full ownership, renaming it Orchard Joinery. Now, as Geoff approaches retirement, their son David Orchard has stepped up to continue the legacy. Orchard Joinery specialises in bespoke joinery solutions, including kitchen renovations, custom cabinetry for interiors and exteriors, timber doors, windows, and staircases. The company manages the entire process from in-house design, featuring 3D kitchen walkthroughs, to fabrication and installation. Under David’s leadership, the company has integrated modern innovations such as CNC machinery and digital design tools, enhancing production efficiency and providing clients with interactive visual design experiences. “I’m proud to carry on what my parents started and build on it for the future,” says David, who took over leadership in 2020. Orchard Joinery are Registered Master Joiners, with a team of eight working out of their Te Roto Drive workshop and office. “We’re a blend of old school and new school,” says David. “Utilising technologies to remain competitive while keeping those handcrafted techniques alive also.” These heritage skills were recently showcased in the restoration of a pre-1900 timber cottage and a century-old railway station at the Te Horo Kilns - now used for artist residencies. “It was a special project where we combined traditional joinery with new methods to restore a cherished part of Kapiti heritage,” says David. “We were involved with its timber restoration works including restoring old double hung windows and replicating some of the other heritage timber bits and pieces.That was an interesting project where we got to combine traditional hand-crafted joinery with new manufacturing techniques to restore the heritage of the Te Horo Kilns buildings.” The company’s skilled team of five joiners and three administrators, provide a personable, professional service from the initial consultation to install completion. Orchard Joinery specialises in bespoke kitchens and custom timber cabinetry for residential renovations and works with builders, architects and project managers on fit outs across new residential projects.
