38 | Central Environmental INFRASTRUCTURE T T Bernadette Cooney Innovation in construction and demolition waste Ian and Mike. New Zealand’s first plasterboard recycling initiative is changing the way we think about construction and demolition waste and Fielding based Central Environmental Ltd is helping lead the way forward. With its newly operational recycling facility at Kawakawa Road and a landmark plasterboard recycling scheme, the company is setting a new benchmark across Hawkes Bay, Hastings, Manawatu and Wellington regions. The company is a subsidiary of Central Demolition Group, originally created to manage the waste from in-house projects, it has grown to be a key player in sustainable construction waste solutions in five short years. Expanding into a closed loop recycling service for concrete and cement, treated and untreated timbers, steel, glass and now also plasterboard, collected from construction sites across the lower North Island, both commercial and residential. Managing Director of Central Environmental Ltd, Ian Butcher, says their goal is to divert 100 percent of construction waste from landfill through efficient circular recycling services that repurpose materials for reuse. “We’ve built a multi-system site that allows us to process nearly every construction waste stream,” says Ian. “Concrete is crushed and the aggregate reused for roading, timber is shredded and used as an alternative fuel at Golden Bay Cement, and gypsum is extracted from plasterboard – a lot of which is then returned to Winstone Wallboards to make new product.” The large-scale recycling plant and plasterboard recycling scheme is the result of a partnership between Hastings District and Napier City Councils, Winstone Wallboards, Mitre 10, Carters, Placemakers, ITM and Central Environmental Ltd. “We’ve rolled out the plasterboard recycling scheme; a first of its kind project for New Zealand, which shows what is possible when local government, industry, and business come together with a shared purpose,” he says. The plasterboard recycling initiative distributes returnable bags, with gib board deliveries. Offcuts are bagged up, collected and taken to Central Environmental for processing. The plasterboard initiative has laid the groundwork for a permanent facility in the region and aims to significantly reduce waste sent to Ōmarunui Landfill and cut harmful hydrogen sulphide emissions. Builders also benefit from improved waste tracking, with data collected to support Greenstar project reporting and Tu Toi Gold Star compliance. “Central Environmental Ltd is a Greenstar accredited company and Tu Toi Gold star approved,” says Ian. “Data is collected that helps builders meet project waste reporting and Greenstar certification requirements.” Central Environmental Ltd has also very recently launched a PVC and high-density polyethylene pipe recycling trial for plumbers and electricians, in partnership with Marley, Dynex, and RX Plastics. This three-month trial will provide collection bags for discarded PVC and HDPE, destined to be recycled into new products. Central Environmental is emerging as a valuable partner to construction, offering a range of services alongside their construction and demolition waste disposal, including skip bin hire and Skippa bags, Greenstar reporting, plus aggregate, soil, and compost sales. With a growing team and increasing trade networks Central Environmental Ltd is committed to finding a second life for building and demolition waste throughout the central and lower north.
