Covering a broad region—from Tauranga to Hawke’s Bay and around Mt Ruapehu-Apex Windows is locally owned and operated, with a staff of 20, including qualified joiners with decades of experience, says business owner John Kirkcaldie, who purchased the company in 2009. “Since 2017, Apex has exclusively manufactured Altherm Window Systems, a strategic shift that’s allowed us to offer high-performance, future-focused window and door solutions for the residential and commercial build sector and direct to homeowner for home renovation,” says John. John, a former professional athlete turned builder and entrepreneur, runs Apex Windows with his project managers who are also shareholders, reflecting the family-style ownership model. Partnering with Architectural Profiles Limited (APL) and Architectural Glass Products (AGP)—New Zealand’s leaders in window and glass system technologies, Apex Windows manufactures products that meet and exceed current building code requirements for thermal performance. Central to their offering is the ThermalHeart+® range, which features advanced insulation technologies. These include: ThermalHEART® polyamide barriers that separate cold and warm areas in the frame. ATS (Architectural Thermal Spacer®) and argon gas to reduce heat transfer. Solux-E® and Solux Ultra® glass coatings that improve thermal retention and reduce UV damage. Plus, Centrafix™ installation, aligning insulation layers to boost performance by over 20%. “These technologies work together to create a more energy-efficient home - cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and much healthier overall,” says John. “And the best part? They’re all designed right here in New Zealand for how we actually live.” As part of New Zealand’s largest supply chain for manufacturing windows and doors, Apex Windows and its suppliers APL, integrate sustainability across operations with continuous efforts to improve how products are made, packaged, and delivered. “Together we’ve taken meaningful steps, including switching to renewable packaging with full-circle recovery and reuse,” says John. Their carbonzero product range reflects this commitment, as they work toward eliminating single-use cardboard, foam and timber crates, in favour of more sustainable packaging solutions, when transporting aluminium across their manufacturing network. Soft plastic recycling is also a focus, so Instead of sending soft plastic waste from externally sourced materials to landfill, APL now collects and bundles it at their warehouse, transporting it to PACT Recycling. These changes are backed by independent oversight—APL works closely with Toitū Envirocare, a leading carbon certification body, to ensure their progress is measured and credible.
