In those early times, only one surgery was performed each day, as cleaning and sterilising instruments took so long. Napier’s devastating earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931 shook Royston’s original hospital to its core, destroying the beloved building, and prompting the development of Royston’s new home on its current site on Southland Road, Hastings. In more recent times, continuous development for improving patient outcomes in the Hawke’s Bay community has resulted in two new operating theatres, new pre-admissions, admissions, and recovery areas. “At Evolution Healthcare our purpose is to provide continuous excellence in the health and wellbeing of the people in our care,” says Sue Channon, Chief Executive Officer, Evolution Healthcare, a leading provider of healthcare services in New Zealand and Australasia, and the owner of Royston Hospital. “We see this in the developments undertaken in facilities like Royston, along with leading innovative technology, investing in the latest equipment, and investing in our people. “ Evolution Healthcare works in partnership with its property partners, Vital Healthcare Property Trust, to meet the growing needs of healthcare services within the Hawke’s Bay community through investment in key infrastructure. “We have invested in two additional operating theatres at Royston to support the growing demand in elective procedures. These two new operating theatres will mean we can provide around 3,500 more elective surgeries each year. That is a significant increase to support our community.” To ensure Royston hospital remained operational and with minimal disruption to patients and staff, the development projects have been managed in three stages. “Stage One commenced in 2018 with the removal of our Prospect Road House, which was on adjacent land, with site clearance enabling the land to be built on. “Stage two included upgrading Sterile Services, and the development of new reception, administration offices, foyer, lift and a new carpark. We’re now completing Stage Three, which includes our two-new operating theatres, expanded post anaesthesia unit, pre-admissions and admission areas, and inwards goods. All work will be completed early in the New Year.” All three stages were undertaken throughout the COVID pandemic, which Sue says required contractors to deftly navigate challenges in respect to the supply of materials. “They have done an incredible job of developing our hospital throughout the challenges and we have remained on track. Alexanders Construction has been a partner with Royston for some years through the developments of Royston Hospital, along with the construction of our new Royston Day Surgery, an orthopaedic day hospital on the Royston campus.” Evolution Healthcare’s vision was for a modern hospital environment that delivers exceptional patient satisfaction along with improved patient efficiencies. Sue says the hospital’s architects — HSPC, Dougan Larkworthy Team Architects, and Klein — achieved that vision through the hospital’s layout and design. MHL Project Manager Bryan Matthews has been involved in the many developments for Royston Hospital including the build of Royston Day Surgery. Working with Evolution Healthcare since 2017, Bryan has managed the many development projects, from contractor engagement, design, and through to construction. “Bryan’s expertise supports our Group to ensure our upgrades and developments meet the ever-changing requirements in healthcare. “Working with local contractors like Alexanders Construction and MHL Project Managers sees a close collaboration and communication between all teams — from design, contractors, and our Evolution project and development management team. This allows for our hospital to be fully operational whilst completing our developments successfully.” From one theatre in 1921 to seven theatres with the latest innovative technology Hawke’s Bay’s Royston Hospital has come a long way and the development journey is continuing for betterment of Hawke’s Bay community. “We have invested in two additional operating theatres at Royston to support the growing demand in elective procedures.” ROYSTON HOSPITAL L T D L T D
