Managing Director Rob Kirwan, says it is with this background of experience, that Culham Engineering has provided Contact Energy with the complete package for project management, fabrication, site installation of pressure equipment, piping systems, structural steel, coatings and delivery. “With our history developed in the petrochemical industry in Whangarei, Culham Engineering was the ideal candidate for complex and challenging heavy engineering projects such as this.” In 2017, Culham Engineering expanded from its Whangarei facility, opening a workshop in Kawerau, and its Tokoroa facility two years later to service Oji’s Mills and the local area. “Looking to grow, we targeted areas to base our business where the values and community re lect our history, and to o er opportunities to the young people of the area by way of apprenticeships. CulhamEngineering The operations in both these areas have increased signi icantly and, supported by our project management o ice in Auckland, now provide the central North Island with a large capacity for pressure piping and equipment, structural steel, tank construction and industrial maintenance.” All three of Culham Engineering’s workshops have contributed to that capacity by fabricating seven large pressure vessels, 280 tonnes of pipe supports and many kilometres of complex large bore piping consisting of 40 di erent wall weight combinations. All components are currently being expertly installed by the project team, that will peak at around 100 personnel in 2023, to deliver the Tauhara Geothermal Separation Station for Contact Energy. “Our business is built around many aspects and is vertically integrated,” explains Rob. “We’ve created substantial capacity in many areas. Culham Engineering is one of a few companies in New Zealand that can take on almost any type of heavy fabrication. We work in infrastructure, structural steel, mechanical maintenance, piping and pressure vessels, shutdown planning, scheduling and execution, storage tanks, petrochemical, pulp and paper, geothermal, and all aspects of marine shipbuilding and repair, industrial blasting and coatings, craneage and transport. All of these are complemented by an outstanding Project management team that fully understands "best for the project”.
