ENGINEERING CivilTEC CivilTEC is a fast-growing civil and transportation specialist in Hawke’s Bay with a passion for road design and a flair for delivering robust technical solutions that bring concepts to life. The small team is proud to be contributing to a number of ‘social good’ housing initiatives, including local Papakāinga projects delivering positive social and cultural outcomes. Alongside their work in the local region, the CivilTEC team partners with other consultancies and councils on projects from the Waikato through to the Kapiti Coast. Key competencies include road and bulk earthworks design, civil draughting, pedestrian and cycle facility design, technical advice, land development design expertise and construction management of roading projects. With a broad engineering knowledge and equipped with the latest industry-standard software, CivilTEC offers a skilled technical service and works closely with clients to help deliver their vision. “We take projects the whole way, from the initial start-up meeting with the client to developing concept drawings and then detailed designs,” says Richard Gruiters, CivilTEC’s founder and principal engineer. “We also oversee construction to make sure it is built correctly. As a small team, we offer continuity for the client so they always deal with the same person from start to finish and that means everything goes smoothly.” CivilTEC works closely with other local consultancies – including town planners, surveyors, geotechnical engineers and three-waters engineers - to ensure they provide the best outcomes for their clients. Helping to develop infrastructure on Papakāinga projects that support whānau to live on their ancestral land is very rewarding for CivilTEC, which is working closely with Sheeran Associates - a company at the forefront of Papakāinga feasibility and implementation work - as their preferred civil engineering consultancy partner in Hawke’s Bay. “We’re currently involved with five Papakāinga projects: two are under construction and nearly finished; the others are on track to be completed throughout 2023. We’re also working on a unique marae project in Central Hawkes Bay and are undertaking land development projects with the Hastings District Council aimed at creating housing opportunities for people who need them the most. “Working in partnership with other local consultancies, we can deliver the whole infrastructure solution from technical design through to overseeing construction of the waste sewer, storm water and drinking water to earthworks and roading for sections.” CivilTEC is supporting the future of engineering in the region, having taken on an engineering cadet, Chris Willox, who was recruited from Richard’s old school, Havelock North High School, initially under a work experience programme called Gateway. At the end of the programme, Richard offered Chris an engineering cadetship and is supporting his training as a civil engineer. “Chris has been with us for a year, and it has worked out so well that we’d hope to do this again in the future. Chris is really enjoying the opportunity to apply what he’s learning and we’re giving him as much industry experience and mentoring as we can.” CivilTEC is based out of a smart shared working space in Hawke’s Bay, further reinforcing the company’s positive and collegial workplace culture.
