It recently won a Civil Contractors New Zealand highly commended award for its work on one such project - Jervois Quay in Wellington. When there was a collapse on one of the lanes of the main six-lane highway going into Wellington E Carson & Sons was called in to discuss solutions to repair the 100-year-old stormwater pipe that had eroded and caused a sinkhole. It was decided to close all six arterial lanes in and out of Wellington for four days over Queen’s Birthday weekend in 2021 and remove the eroded 450mm pipe and replace it with a 750mm pipe under the six lanes. E Carson & Sons engaged local civil contractors G.P. Friel Ltd and E.N. Ramsbottom Ltd to assist, with each contractor working on different parts of the project. Extensive traffic management was required and including hydro-excavators and reinstatement, a total of 100 staff worked on the project 24 hours a day in four crews – two per day and two per night. E Carson & Sons director Eddie Carson says it was “quite a complicated job” working in a tidal area with the sea sitting just 150mm below the road at high tide, which necessitated the use of 12 pumps pumping 700L of water a second into the harbour for the duration of the project. The project was extremely successful with the lanes opening up to traffic 24 hours ahead of schedule. Entering the 2022 2° Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards presented the perfect opportunity for Mexted Sports Turf to showcase the incredible work done by its dedicated team to a wider audience. Winning the Construction, Trades and Infrastructure category confirmed the fifty year old business as leaders not just in its industry, but across multiple sectors. “Sports turf is a niche industry and we tend to fly under the radar as an industry and as a company, so entering the business awards was a great way to promote and celebrate what we do for the community and the region,” says Managing Director Cameron Mexted.” A key goal for Mexted is to recognise its staff for the excellent work they do in constructing and maintaining beautiful natural, hybrid and artificial turf for all sporting codes throughout the Wellington region, and beyond. Cameron reflects that winning the award was a great way to do that and to celebrate with the team. “Over the years we’ve picked up and adapted technology and techniques from all over the world. I believe our success at 2° Business Awards comes from our drive to do things right for the end-user and this is seen at the local community level as well as the national stadium level. A current working example of this is the construction and maintenance work we’re undertaking at the newly established NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport. These fields will be used as a home base by the men’s and women’s Hurricanes, Phoenix and Wellington rugby teams.” Cameron adds that a strong desire to support the Hutt Chamber of Commerce, which ran this year’s awards, was another key reason for entering the awards. Based in the Wellington region, Mexted Sports Turf specialises in the design, construction and maintenance of natural and artificial sports surfaces for councils, stadiums, sports clubs and schools throughout New Zealand. “While a large proportion of our work is in the greater Wellington region, working for the four local councils as well as schools, we also undertake construction contracts in other parts of the country. “We’re a preferred contractor for Auckland Council and Tauranga City Council. We also do work in the South Island, having rebuilt Hagley Oval in 2013, and four new playing fields at Ngā Puna Wai in Christchurch in 2018 as part of the earthquake rebuild programme. Some of our work is for head contractors. “We did the resurfacing of Eden Park in 2020, preparing the surface and assisted in the rollout of the new HG Hero Eden Park edition turf for the Australian head contractors, HG Turf. Some of our work is for private clients, including the Morgan Golf Course, and the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport.” Cameron says he is proud to have the opportunity to head the company that has evolved from an agricultural contracting business founded by his grandfather, Wilf Mexted, in Pauatahanui and later refined by his father Steve, to become the business that it is today. “Our vision is for generations of Kiwis to enjoy world-class sports surfaces. It’s that desire for excellence that drives Mexteds’ business ethics, which are underpinned by investment in knowledgeable and well-trained staff, quality equipment and resources, strong management systems and the latest equipment and technology. In order to achieve this we need to regularly reinvest in our people and our equipment and constantly plan ahead. My dad had a motto ‘Good enough, is never enough’, and we still live that to this day and continually look to go the extra mile for our clients. “Our approach to business is underpinned by our work ETHICS, which stands for Extra mile, Team work, Honesty, Initiative, Communication and Skills.“ Based in Upper Hutt E Carson & Sons Ltd was started over 50 years ago by Eddie’s father, Eddie senior, who encouraged his four sons to join him over the years. Eddie, who now runs the company, is the only son continuing his father’s legacy. The company has recently completed a project on the Paremata rising main for which it utilised new inline valve technology for New Zealand. The valves mean individual pump stations could be turned off, which prevented sewer flow into the harbour while a repair to a broken pipe was undertaken. This year the company undertook the Elsdon Park pipe upgrade and wetland project which will alleviate flooding and improve the health of the Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour by capturing excess water and filtering stormwater before it can run into the harbour. E Carson & Sons worked closely with the neighbouring marae even employing a couple of their young people, one of whom is undertaking a drainage apprenticeship with the company. E Carson & Sons is currently undertaking a five-year project in Avalon for Wellington Water, which will see the aged sewer pipe infrastructure replaced across the suburb. “Extensive traffic management was required and including hydro-excavators and reinstatement.” 25 Brokven Hill Rd, Porirua 04 236 6142 enquiries@atmsnz.co.nz www.atmsnz.co.nz • Traffic Management • Traffic Management Plans • Construction & Events • Sign & Gear Hire • Asphalt Reinstatement • Traffic Management n & Gear Hire ATMS’s core focus is on safety for their staff, clients and the public.
