Holmes Construction Group BUILDING Holmes Construction NZ reached 65 years in business last October. The special milestone marks a three-generation family success story that has paved the way to a thriving enterprise undertaking commercial, residential and industrial projects across Wellington and the Wairarapa. Their proud tradition of carpentry and building all began in a shed in Greytown in the 1940s, where young Will Holmes would spend hours at his grandad’s side, watching him work and soaking up a love for the craft of woodworking. By 16, Will had secured an apprenticeship and proved a quick learner. Five years’ later, in 1958, and by then with the benefit of local industry experience under his belt, Will had co-founded his own business, (initially Greytown Building Contractors, before being re-named HR Builders). Within a few years, he was the sole owner of ‘Will Holmes Ltd’ and had been joined by his first apprentice, his younger brother Ian Holmes. Will’s two sons Tim and Andy started their careers in the family business in the late 1970s and later returned to it, prompting the change of name to Holmes Construction Ltd in 1988. By the late 1990s, Tim and Andy had stepped up as owners of the family business and, under their leadership, pursued a development opportunity in Wellington (‘The Courtenay Apartments’) that led to the establishment of Holmes Wellington.
