72 | On-point renovations and new builds Outdoor fire and entertaining area. from page 70 BUILDING Davcon “Stained cedar cladding on the exterior, and bespoke windows specifically designed to maximise the most desired view shafts in the house, in this case for example the ones that look straight down the river on the north side. It’s full of light but protected from the afternoon sun by large eaves, and allows the clients to relax in comfort and enjoy the view at any time of day.” The other awards were a Gold Medal, given for those houses that score more than 1800 out of a possible 2000, and which in turn won them the $4million house category as Jules explains. “Because we won gold and were the only house in that category in our region we won the category. If we’d only got a silver we wouldn’t have been awarded it.” They won two Lifestyle Awards: The Kitchen Excellence Award for the Central North Island, and the Interiors Award, both of which Jules puts down to the judges liking (and scoring highly) what he describes as the classic Coltart look with vertical tongue in groove panels in the walls, bespoke joinery including spacious walk-in wardrobes, heated concrete floors, and a beautiful fireplace built from local riverstone. The one they’re most proud of though is the Craftsmanship Award. Of the 2000 points you can get for a house 1300 of them relate to things to do specifically with the work done by the builders. The other 700 are for things like design and materials outside the builders’ control. “By getting the Craftsmanship Award we got the ultimate award for a builder,” says Jules. “That’s credit to Roger who was across everything right from the start and we were lucky to have such a great team of experienced and talented sub-contractors to make it all happen.” Jules also acknowledged his wife Kelly “for putting up with me,” and the clients and the architects for having faith in him. If these latest in a steady stream of awards over the years are anything to go by, that faith is generally well rewarded.
