86 | BUILDING Taylor Long Construction Diverse projects rolling in Taylor Long Construction completes a wide range of projects throughput the region. Sue Russell Located just north of Taupo in Reporoa, Taylor Long Construction is led jointly by founder Syd Long and son Taylor. The business has been operating in the district over 20 years and engages in a wide range of construction forms. And it’s the diversity of projects, Taylor says, that keeps the business ticking along well, backed up by a broad range of skill-sets. Larger commercial projects, such as the work at the Permapine processing plant in Reporoa is where the company likes to position itself. “We enjoy doing work locally and supporting the growth of this district,” Taylor says. At Permapine, Taylor Long Construction is building a new treatment plant. Permapine Roundwood is a timber production facility, shaping green logs into a number of roundwood products, such as poles, square housepiles and an assortment of timber cuts. Most of these products require a fixation process to imbue preservative chemicals into the wood and this process can be accelerated within a cylinder with the addition of steam under pressure. Taylor Long Construction were commissioned to build a space and for large tanks to be fitted on the site. Work on the project is going well. “We started at the beginning of this year doing the excavation work, so it’s been a big job for us. In late-November the tanks and vessels lifted in, so now they’re in place we can build the steel and timber structure around and over it.” A great deal of excavation and removal of waste-material was necessary before work could really get underway. As example of just how versatile the team is, work at Waiouru Military Camp, building a new kitchen, which started in October 2021, is also coming to a close. The main Mess has 1700sqm of kitchen and dining space, able to cater for 800-1000 dining personnel. “Four of us will attend this event and we’re really looking forward to it.” When Taylor left school he joined the company, becoming a partner by the time he was 20 years old. Today, the team extends to 14 skilled and entry level builders, project managers and consultants. “We don’t specialise but work in two main sectors, residential and commercial,” Taylor says. “There are a couple of local companies that we work with sometimes and much of our larger work is tendered for. The bulk of our team are builders, with a project manager, me and Syd completing the number. Syd and I share our roles.” Since COVID came along there has been good demand and plenty of work on. At the start of 2022, 18 people were working in the company and Taylor says that, like many other building companies, they are struggling to find suitably qualified and experienced staff to work. While the bulk of work is in the greater-Taupo area, Taylor says that for the right sort of project they do go much further afield, with an extensive retaining wall completed in Kerikeri, Northland and builds in Palmerston North. Asked what he puts the success of the business down to Taylor is convinced a significant factor is the contrasting ideas he and Syd have. “It helps to bring light to the way forward. We’re both more than happy to put ourselves out there in a way that benefits the business. We’re quite methodical in our approach. And the whole team works hard with very aligned purposes.” Currently Taylor Long Construction employs 5 apprentices and is prepared to back the right person, with the right attitude, to gain qualifications.“We think it’s a responsibility we have to the team to set them up well to make a good career from building.
