92 | Richard Loader Grand vision for amazing facility During race days the extensive lawns and grounds are utilised with a lot of temporary infrastructure. Hawke’s Bay Racing Club Inc COMMUNITY Hawke’s Bay Racing (HBRC) has a grand vision to be regarded as a leading racing, hospitality and entertainment operator across Australasia — and it’s a vision the board, management and service team are committed to achieving. Encompassing 32 hectares, HBRC takes pride of place in the heart of Hastings. Just a short stroll from the bustling and vibrant township, HBRC is the Bay’s largest community asset, and the goal is to utilise its many and diverse facilities 365 days a year. In addition to Group One and Two race meetings held on one of New Zealand’s premier horse racing tracks, with indoor and outdoor options, HBRC lends itself perfectly to an array of events from small scale meetings to corporate conferences, from weddings and 21st birthdays, through to a diversity of cultural events and old favourites like Christmas in the Park and fireworks displays. Steeped in racing history, the Club’s premier lounge is the Cheval Room, which can cater for to up 250 people, and is located right next to the parade ring and the track itself. Throughout the members and public stands, HBRC boasts a total of 14 function and meetings room and bars of varying sizes and compositions, that can cater for a wide range of community needs. During race days the extensive lawns and grounds are utilised with a lot of temporary infrastructure and in those long hot summer Hawke’s Bay months there is nothing better than venturing out from the stand and enjoying the wonderful outdoor setting. Aaron Hamilton has recently been appointed to the role of HBRC’s CEO. While new to the racing industry, Aaron brings extensive global experience in event and venue organisation experience, along with energy and fresh ideas. Being a Kiwi, he also has a natural passion for sports in general. Aaron acknowledges that as a large-scale venue, HBRC has been well underutilised in the past and that is something he and the board are determined to turn around. “We need to do more than just racing, and that means becoming a 365-day-a-year utilised asset. Hastings/Hawke’s Bay has this amazing facility right on its doorstep, and there’s a lot of appetite to get as much use as we can, as quickly as we can. When concerts are coming to Hawke’s Bay, we want them to be held here. We want community events like the Diwali — also known as the festival of the lights, Matariki, Christmas in the Park all coming to the racecourse. We foresee large concerts and festivals as well as smaller boutique events. We want to be a leading Australasian player in hospitality, and the Bay is a perfect location to be just that.” Envisioning an indoor/outdoor use of facilities, Aaron offers the example of a wedding ceremony being held on some nice parts of the lawn, while the reception could be hosted in the Cheval Room. With the ability to provide a turn-key solution for events, Aaron says the level of service provided at HBRC will be be a real point of difference. “We have great service providers in terms of catering, cleaning, and security. With a can-do attitude we will make sure the clients and their guests feel extremely well looked after and have a really good time when they come to the Racecourse. “We want to get to the point where our levels of service go above and beyond what the hire is and what guests expect when they come here. “We have a very good on-site caterer and very good partners when it comes to food and beverage offerings, showcasing local wines, craft beers, ciders, and fresh seasonal produce straight from the food bowl of New Zealand. “We get a lot of positive feedback about our staff and service from clients, we just want to get more clients coming here.” Now taking bookings for 2023 - 2024 Wedding & Event Decorating and Hire Taking an event from an ordinary occasion to something special is simple with A Touch of Elegance.
