Totalspan - Wellington/Horowhenua BUILDING It’s a commonly held misconception that building with steel is more costly than timber, but material costs, as well as advancements in engineering and manufacturing have narrowed that cost gap significantly – making large span steel buildings a more cost-effective solution says Totalspan Wellington owner Jamie Hanna. And he should know, having previously worked as Franchise Development Manager within Totalspan’s head office where he gained insight into the business model and deeper understanding into the viability of steel for construction. “With larger span roofs, steel is structurally stronger and more often than not is a more cost-effective option than timber. It can span larger distances without the need for additional support which means clearer spans across larger roof spaces,” Jamie says. “This makes it an excellent choice for larger buildings typically used for commercial and industrial purposes.” Beyond cost considerations, steel buildings have undergone transformative changes in their configurations, enhancing their versatility for interior fittings. “We can fully line out retail display spaces within our builds. We can put up nice gib finished walls and lighting and office features. It doesn’t need to feel or look like a shed at all.” Changing perceptions about what a Totalspan steel building can be is all a part of the mission for the new franchise owners for Totalspan Wellington, Jamie and Nicola Hanna. Together with their two young children, Grace, 10 and Sam, 7, the family are in the process of moving from Palmerston North to the Kapiti Coast to run operations at Totalspan Wellington, located at 27 Riverbank Road, Otaki. From here, Totalspan Wellington services an area from Waitarere Beach, Horowhenua down to central Wellington and back up to the top of the Hutt Valley. “Before buying the Totalspan Wellington franchise, I had 15 years with the head office of Toyota New Zealand, so I worked extensively with the New Zealand network in product and sales roles. I also spent four years with Norwood Farm Machinery and ran one of the wholesale divisions there.” Approaching their first-year milestone in business, Jamie, and his building team of four fulltime builders, including a Licensed Building Practitioner, have already successfully completed some notable commercial projects. This includes a 20m x 10m x 6 metre Totalspan building for Macauley Metals of Petone. They had just commissioned a new piece of plant, so required a new building to house it in. Totalspan supplied it and had it up and built on site in three weeks. A project currently underway is another plant building for a wastewater plant at Winstones Quarry, Otaki. “This building will be pre-built and craned into place to be fixed to a raised platform five metres off the ground,” says Jamie. “We have the knowledge, the resources and the capacity to look at builds that are a bit outside the box.” Whatever type of building you need from a carport to a garage to an office/warehouse or a farm shed or new factory – Totalspan can. Adding to their appeal, Totalspan provides a 25-year structural guarantee and five-year workmanship guarantee. Plus, a manufacturer’s warranty for all Coloursteel roofing and cladding products.
