102 | BUILDING “All the guys who work for me have done their apprenticeships here which is great because I’ve had a big hand in shaping them into the builders they are today and they understand the standards I work to.” Rural build specialists Pahiatua based JTD Building specialises in rural work and renovations. JTD Building T T Sue Russell Joss Tua-Davidson established JTD Building in 2016 but has been building since 2001, when he began his building journey working for another builder, then went sub-contracting before deciding the time was right to step out on his own as a sole trader. JTD Building is based in Pahiatua, in the Tararua district and Joss says he does a lot of work out in the rural areas. He now has a team of five builders. “During the first Covid lockdown I got stuck into really working on my business management systems thinking this was a positive use of this forced down-time. I’m certainly glad that I concentrated on these system at that time,” Joss says. Lack of materials experienced by many throughout the sector didn’t have a big impact for Joss and the team as it did to other companies. The intention is to try to take on another new builder every year or so, as demand for services warrants. “All the guys who work for me have done their apprenticeships here which is great because I’ve had a big hand in shaping them into the builders they are today and they understand the standards I work to.” Joss has only praise for the BCITO assessor who has pretty much been with the company since it formed. Asked what projects the team were working on as December approaches, Joss says they have a large renovation of a 100 year old villa which has been challenging and rewarding. “I have quite a lot of experience doing these sorts of projects. Some of the ‘bones’ had to be fixed. During the covid era it was important, Joss explains, to have several projects on the go, given uncertainties regarding materials supplies. “Since that time has ended we’ve sort of kept that going with three or four projects underway at various stages at any one time.” Joss says he very much enjoys doing rural work and getting out of town when the opportunity presents. Pahiatua is home to about 3,000 people and there is a small group of builders operating in the area. “This works well as we have our own clients.” Joss says one strength his business has is that it is small in size. “It means we have control of what happens each day on site. When you start to get bigger you have to bring more people in and you aren’t going to have trained everyone yourself as I currently have.” A.P.V. PLUMBING LTD Kenny Allison All Work Guaranteed !!!
