PAGE 14 T T Sue Russell Refrigeration specialists Active Refrigeration specialises in designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. CONTRACTING Active Refrigeration is a company that specialises in designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Their Palmerston North business established 6 years ago and is part of a nation-wide network of Active Refrigeration entities, with the first one founded in Christchurch in 2000. Daniel Jordan, the company’s local service manager says that one of the reasons the business has succeeded and grown is that it understands what it does best and sticks to those activities. “There are 10 of us in Palmerston North and we cover an area from this city right down to Wellington and up to as far as Ohakune.” When Business Centre spoke with Daniel the team were working on a signficant upgrade for a client changing their coolant from a refrigerant to CO², responding to government led initiatives to reduce emissions impacting global warming. Working in the team are 4 apprentices, with Stephanie starting the day of our conversation. “She is new to the industry. The apprenticeship programme takes between 3 and 4 years to complete and is a combination of on-job, off-job and block courses. It’s a thorough learning pathway. There’s a lot of in-house training alongside experienced qualified technicians and staff also go to Auckland once a year.” Stephanie came from a customer service role within the industry and clearly has a strong passion for the refrigeration and air-conditioning industries. “She is going to do very well with such enthusiasm and a real calling to be part of the team.” The apprenticeship teaching curriculum is currently in the process of being rewritten, to bring it absolutely up to speed with the rapid shift in technologies and sytems used. “There is a lot of push from government to get us industry away from high GWP refrigerants and with the phase-down to meet the lower carbon targets, its really important our team is equipped with the skills and knowledge that will serve the industry well into the future.” Asked how the year has been Daniel says they have been busy and there has been a push to take on new clientele. There is always one qualified technician on call for a week at a time. Being part of a nation-wide collective is a good thing for the company. “We generally try to catch up once a year, but there is a lot of interaction ongoing from one branch to another.” 2024 will start with the completion of the current CO2 project as well as several plant upgrades between Manawatu, Levin and Wellington all with a focus on system improvements with efficiency and sustainabilty all at the forefront. And with such a large footprint to cover, Active Refrigeration is actively looking for someone to head up the Wellington region. Specialising in the use of sutainable commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning Daniel says Active Refrigeration is a great company to be part of. “The company has excellence at its core, employing some of the most respected and qualified engineers across New Zealand. We’re pleased to be providing pathways for new people into the industry. It’s a rewarding career.” Striving always to deliver great service to clients is the core focus for all in the team. “That culture to be the best in the game permeates all aspects of what we do and is reflected in the team who work with us.” Industrial, Commercial &Dairy Refrigeration Service Engineered Cooling & Heating Solutions.
