| 19 Forward thinking, determination, and inspiring self-belief has paved the way for Paci c Steel xing Limited's successful journey and progress. Paci c Steel xing, in its second year of operations, can be proud of its accomplishments thus far. As a Maori and Paci c Island owned business, Paci c Steel xing, upholds a proactive approach to encouraging its sta members to take pride in their work and feel professional, while also fostering career advancement and job prospects. From humble beginnings but backed by 29 years’ experience within steel construction industry in both Australia and New Zealand, Cook Island born and PSF Operations Director, Sai Wichman, had a dream and lifelong passion to pursue developing his own steel xing company. Experience in some key projects, included supervisory roles on various Windfarms, High Rise Buildings, Tunnels (Victoria Park in Auckland being one of them), Coal and Gas Mining Building Foundations, Various Ports and numerous bridges including the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane. Sai’s knowledge of the industry and longing for the freedom and exibility and not being controlled by any employer originated the creation and business development of PSF. Flanked by partner and Financial Accounts Director, Andrea Dunn who after completing 20 career years in the Education and Journalism elds, felt like she was walking into the steel xing business blind but welcomed the challenge of learning something new. Being able to draw on the knowledge, experience and expertise of Sai to be able to run the company successfully has provided a sense of con dence. Landing their rst contract, Eastland Port Wharf 7 Upgrade, in Andrea’s hometown Tairawhiti, seemed almost too good to be true but they also worked tirelessly from Brisbane communicating with the project managers during the tendering process. This foundation project was awarded directly under construction specialists McConnell Dowell who made the process smooth sailing. “Too good to be true, is de nitely that. Entering an Indian takeaway store, Sai picked up the local Gisborne newspaper, pointed to a front-page article containing a photo of the wharf and a crane and said to me why don’t we try and bid for this contract? and that is exactly what we did,” said Dunn. PSF’s contributing steel xing works for the project included fabricating, placing and xing of Pile Plugs, Headstocks, Capping Beams, Retaining Walls and Deck Slabs. This begun in September 2022 with the nal rebar tied in August 2023. Providing their steel xing expertise towards a signi cant community project was both humbling and ful lling. There were challenges, including Cyclone Gabrielle, but positive collaboration and resilience among stakeholders, main contractors and subcontractors the project was completed successfully. The PSF team are immensely proud of the targeted outcome, introducing the company to the market and showing professional capability and capacity for the services they provided. Creating positive relationships with the McConnell Dowell team has been a vital learning development which PSF hopes will continue to ourish. Since completion, PSF, have continued providing quality services on key projects such as SH25 Taparahi Remediation Slip and AIAL Taxiway Mike.
