26 | BTW Company Ltd: 50th Anniversary T T Kim Newth Celebrating 50 years of innovation The BTW team: Kathryn Barrett, Grant Aitken, Dave Bolder and Matt Dickey. “I’m really passionate about protecting the natural environment and it’s good to see that come through in legislation.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT BTW Company’s story started 50 years ago with three enterprising surveyors – Buxton, Tuder and Waugh – who brought their passion and professionalism to the shores of Australia in 1973 and then New Zealand in 1974. Five decades on, BTW is a flourishing multi-disciplinary consultancy, still guided by the same core values that inspired their founders. Originally based in Taranaki, BTW is today ‘making it happen’ for clients and communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. In the early 1970s, New Zealand was abuzz with news that one of the world’s largest gas fields had been discovered off the Taranaki coast – the Maui gas field. At the time, surveyors Buxton, Tuder and Waugh were Singapore-based, working on energy projects there, but when the New Zealand government of the day announced plans to develop the Maui field, the trio decided to bring their expertise to Taranaki and opened offices in Ngāmotu - New Plymouth. They were soon well-established in the region’s energy sector, providing professional hydrographic and surveying services along with related software solutions. BTW remains a key enabler on energy projects in Aotearoa – both renewable and non-renewable – and, thanks to a focus on innovation, their breadth of services has kept on growing through the years, always keeping pace with changing technology and their clients’ project needs. “Having started out as a professional surveying company, we are now a multi-service enterprise employing not only surveyors but also planners, environmental scientists, and engineers – structural, civil, geotechnical and three waters,” says Managing Director Grant Aitken. “As well, we have expanded our geographical spread with offices in Ngāmotu - New Plymouth, Kirikiriroa – Hamilton, Whāingaroa – Raglan and Taupō. Our purpose is creating a better future for our staff, our clients, the community and the environment. In 2024 - our 50th year in Aotearoa - we are proud to acknowledge our past, present and future.” BTW is celebrating this special milestone with a new symbol, based on an unfurling fern frond and spiral Takarangi design, representing how they are moving forward to embrace change while being guided by the past and anchored by their shared knowledge and connection to place and people. This is now part of their branding. A core value for BTW is kaitiakitanga or guardianship, and the company is committed to a long term stewardship vision. “I’m really passionate about protecting the natural environment and it’s good to see that come through in legislation,” observes Dave Bolder, BTW Environment Manager – Associate. “It is good to see change – and obviously, we’re involved with that change and bringing a more holistic approach to the environment and land development.” Fundamental to BTW’s ongoing impact, too, is an understanding that with meaningful connection and engagement, great things can happen. Their success as an integrated multidisciplinary consultancy has been built on fostering strong values-based relationships with clients, consultants and local iwi, as well as growing great people internally and embracing the latest technology. “We really enjoy bringing on younger team members and seeing them grow and really thrive in the consultancy world,” notes Matthew Dickey, BTW Director, Principal Civil/ Three Waters Engineer. It is a sentiment echoed by Kathryn Barrett, BTW Cadastral Survey Team Leader – Associate, who says many young graduates who started out working with BTW in summer jobs have since progressed to full-time roles. “It’s really fantastic to see them grow and be mentored through the years, with a few now taking on project management roles,” she says. Today’s 90+ strong team includes many highly technical roles, for example in structural engineering, environmental science, 3D geospatial surveying and BIM. “To do land development today, you need to have specialists across all facets,” says Grant, who first joined BTW over 20 years ago. “We make sure we choose projects that all our team members will enjoy and be challenged by - it’s what keeps people here. Many have worked with us for a decade or more.” For BTW’s former director and board chair Phil Dickey, seeing BTW grow from a small surveying firm to a multi-disciplinary firm has been a real highlight. He is confident that BTW’s proactive board of directors will continue to strategically steer the company forward to a bright future. “Their vision, I believe, is second to none.” WoF Servicing Repairs Batteries Brakes Diagnostics Cambelts Tyres Vehicle Inspections Fitzroy 06 769 9933 Westown 06 753 2397 Hawera 06 278 6139 www.toyota.co.nz/tasman-toyota salesteam@tasman.toyota.co.nz Tasman Toyota takes pride in assisting BTW Company Ltd with its comprehensive fleet needs, covering Sales, Finance and Servicing.
