36 | Hawke’s Bay: Halcyon Project Management REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Passion for HB region T T from page 35 HPM founders Rodney and Carol Howard - bringing complementary skill sets to the business. Key services provided by HPM include business case/feasibility studies, project management, procurement, stakeholder management, scope planning, critical path programming, risk management, cost management, contract management and administration, quality assurance and health and safety. HPM’s impressive portfolio of successfully completed projects encompasses all stages of the $80 million Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park, which was completed over a five year period and included the EIT Institute of Sport and Health, the Hawkes Bay Regional Aquatic Centre, the Sir Graeme Avery House, and the Rodney Green Foundation Cricket and Boxing Centre. “We’ve also managed a high-end residential development which consisted of a 1000sqm house and separate manager’s lodge. “There’s the renovation and seismic strengthening of the 1930’s Art Deco office building that we now operate from, and the repurposing of another 1930s building into high end apartments. We also worked on the new Tauhara geothermal power station in Taupo to develop and maintain programme control systems.” More recently, HPM has been involved in a range of Cyclone Gabrielle recovery projects including assisting local council with various building and infrastructure projects. “What HPM brings to the table is a proven structure and set of systems to deliver large scale projects, within scope, on time and within budget. “For me that was tested on February 14 when we were working on a new build for WoolWorks NZ in Awatoto that wasn’t yet out of the ground. “All of a sudden it was 2.5 metres under water and we had to quickly pivot into an unplanned project of a large scale to remediate the existing facility and start pulling everything together. “That project will also be within the vicinity of $50 million”. Rodney says HPM has also been involved with many feasibility studies, civil works projects, office and depot upgrades, and community focussed projects, and has a good understanding of central and local government accountability and requirements.” Managing a project, caring for its scope, timeline and budget is a labour of passion at the best of times, but when they contribute to the shape and success of a region - or as with the Tauhara Geothermal project, to New Zealand - then that passion takes on a whole new level. “The projects we are involved in have significant influence. “Our passion for construction projects and creating the best outcomes for our clients sets us apart as independent client side project managers. “Our position as a specialist project management company allows us to operate independently and focus on the best interests of the project and the client. “Collaboration and seeking active participation from parties in a project is critical to generating positive outcomes.” ”Through our independence, HPM is best placed to influence collaboration and promote the development of strong professional relationships across all parties. We’re looking forward to the years ahead and being a key player in Hawke’s Bay’s growth.” Collaboration is the key Throughout its sixteen-year journey, the thing that has set Young + Richards Architecture apart has been its commitment to success through collaboration right from the birth of a project. “We have formed very strong partnerships over the last sixteen years working collaboratively with consultants and builders, and we use the same teams over and over again,” says Founding Partner Harriet Pilkington (nee Richards). “In the Hawke’s Bay region, we have a very strong relationship with a company called Development Nous who does everything we do not, including all types of engineering, planning and landscape design. Because of that collaborative approach we’re able to o er clients a complete service from the time they start a development through to handover.” Harriet founded Young + Richards Architecture in partnership with Elvon Young as an Auckland based practice, bringing together their collective experience, skill sets and passion for their craft. Today the pair collaboratively lead a team of 51 sta across o ices in Auckland, Queenstown and Napier, running a design studio in parallel with a project delivery studio, providing a nationwide service with particular focus on the Hawkes Bay, Auckland and Queenstown regions. “Our design studio produces bespoke architecture, interiors, and development consultancy services for projects of all scales. Our clients include private home owners, business owners and government organisations. We do commercial work alongside our residential services and we’re leaders in equine architecture and social housing as well as high-end bespoke design. We designed the Ellerslie Racecourse redevelopment and Cambridge Stud, which is New Zealand’s preeminent racing stable. We also work directly with large construction company clients, as well as health and education clients. Our clientele is very broad.” The project delivery studio specialises in systemised documentation and roll out. Harriet explains that a client in the retail sector for example may want to establish stores across New Zealand and Australia, and Young + Richards will develop and document a tailored design system in order for this to be realised. In the last ive years the development and growth of the Hawkes Bay o ice has been a particular focus and the local team based in Napier continue to have a broad range of projects on the boards. Collaboration has been at the heart of Young + Richards’ successful journey, and as much as anything this is about not being ego driven, but listening to a client’s needs and providing a tailored solution that meets those desires. “This results in happy repeat clients and new opportunities,” agrees Harriet, who has been passionate about the craft of design since childhood.
