Callum Sutherland, below. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Based in the ever more populous Wairarapa region, Tararua Construction Management brings 20 years of project management experience to commercial construction projects across the North Island. Managing director Callum Sutherland earned his project management stripes working on landmark Wellington buildings for Fletcher Construction, then Arrow International. He started Tararua Construction Management in 2018 after taking over the high-profile Hawke’s Bay Terminal Expansion project which he was already managing for Arrow International when it was liquidated. Everyone working on the project was retained and it went smoothly ahead under Callum’s independent management. A great example of a local facility expanding to meet growing demand, the $25 million terminal expansion added new arrival and departure lounges, a central cafe and retail hub, a public mezzanine viewing lounge, an Air New Zealand Koru lounge expansion and fit-out, and new Hawke’s Bay Airport office facility with boardroom. This project officially kicked Tararua Construction Management into gear and before its successful completion, Callum offered his services to local developer back home in the Wairarapa. His first commercial project in his home territory was the Five Rivers Medical in Greytown. The $6 million, 1490sqm integrated facility with ultra sound, gym, is a huge asset to the people of South Wairarapa as it brings them a range of health care and specialist services, some of which were previously only available by travelling over the hill to Wellington. The health facility includes Greytown Medical, community and commercial pathology and medical laboratory Awanui Laboratories, Greyscale Ultrasound specialising in muscular-skeletal, obstetric, pregnancy, vascular ultrasound and DEXA bone density scanning, rehabilitation gymnasium Healthfit Collective, The Physio Spot, Te Whatu Ora Wairarapa, a suite of community district nurses, primary care from Tu Ora Compass Health, a plethora of visiting specialists including both private and public, Mole Map skin/spot checks and full body scanning, clinical psychologist services and a well appointed community room for community use. Callum co-ordinated the project’s main contractor, sub contractors, and consultants to ensure every key milestone was achieved throughout construction. Meanwhile Wairarapa continues to be a growing and prosperous region, with many families moving in from the cities and putting increasing pressure on its existing facilities. As interest rates finally start to ease, local developers who are keen to add facilities of benefit to their communities are seeing opportunities and plenty of land available. Tararua Construction Management has another client in the early stages of planning another new multi million dollar medical and surgical centre, this time in Masterton, as the demand is there and the benefit to the community is great. Tararua Construction Management is here to help achieve these projects on time, on budget, and exceeding quality expectations. Callum has valued relationships with local clients and businesses which allow him to build a structured team around a client’s design. He likes to keep the team local for the most efficient and effective outcome. Callum is proud to be part of the continuous improvement of the Wairarapa’s commercial infrastructure and he makes sure to support local sports clubs so they can grow too. “I was born and bred here so it’s great to help grow the region into somewhere that everyone wants to come to and live in.”
