Manawatu: Hansens REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT A near-doubling of the size of the workshop, and investments in advanced machinery have seen the Manawatu-based Hansens joinery business bounce into 2024 with new capacity and an expansive outlook. The factory in the Palmerston North suburb of Cloverlea has recently been nearly doubled in size, while investment in new machinery includes two New Edge banders, two new CNC machines and a fully automated board stacking system that’s on its way from Germany. “We’re looking to focus our growth on our capacity, increasing our efficiency, introducing the latest automation in machining and production, all the while keeping an elevated level of quality and meeting required deadlines,” says Michelle Hyde who, with husband Grayson Hyde, acquired the company from the liquidators 24 years ago. Grayson had previously worked as its sales and contract manager. With a staff of 35, mainly qualified tradespeople, Michelle and Grayson have seen Hansens through a huge range of large joinery and fit-outs projects, with, for example, many of the apartment blocks and hotels in Wellington having kitchens and bathrooms supplied by Hansens. Other big projects it has completed over the past few years include supplying the kitchens and bathrooms for all 211 units in the 20-level Altitude Apartments in Hobson Street, Auckland, and new furniture and fixtures for New Zealand Post’s and Kiwibank’s 332 branches nationwide. Other big jobs have included supplying the joinery for the 56 Paetutu residences in Petone, a 71-apartment complex in Wellington’s Victoria Street Precinct, and the 174 Eclipse Apartments in Vincent street, Auckland. While Hansens takes on residential and commercial projects of all sizes, it is also recognised as a supplier/manufacturer of high-end residential kitchens and joinery. Nor is Hansens’ output confined to just timber-related products: “We work with or sub-supply all the materials required for a full package to our clients, from stone, brass, Corian, steel and glass to leather and fabrics,” Michelle says. “We cater especially to their residential and customised work projects and we operate a showroom that provides a personalised consultation for every home or project, with a huge range of materials and hardware for clients to choose from.” Hansens has two of its own in-house designers who do all the customised designs for two major building companies, but most of the work they do is from architectural plans supplied by the clients and main contractors. Michelle says that Hansens’ work in the commercial sector is mostly driven by servicing tender inquiries, bringing in a mixture of ongoing projects and relationships built on a foundation of trust and experience. The residential sector, on the other hand, is generally based on servicing an active repeat client base, which itself is a tribute to the company’s reputation for quality work and customer satisfaction whatever the size of the project. • Shop Fitouts • Flashings • Stainless steel handrails • Gates • Fences • Repair work • Water Jet Cutting METALFOLD INDUSTRIES.
