82 | Forest management group goes the full circle Forest 360: NZFOA T T Hugh De Lacy FORESTRY The wild price swings in the international forestry market over the past few years have inspired a forest management company’s push to broaden its services to cover the complete 360-degrees of the forestry cycle, from establishment to fixed-price marketing. Hence its name, Forest360: it goes the full circle. From its roots as a harvesting and marketing company in the Whanganui region, Forest360 has expanded into a full-service provision business focusing on mitigating the risk to forest owners of the unpredictable prices that logs have been attracting. Prices in 2023 prices were “very erratic but currently not too bad,” says Marcus Musson, the Director of Operations at Forest360’s Whanganui branch – it has others throughout the country. “But in the last couple of years it’s been hard to know when the peaks and the troughs are going to occur: they can go from a high to a low in a matter of a month or two. “So we’re now changing our strategy towards doing more medium-to-long-term fixed pricing, and we’re getting a good reception for it from the market because there are clear advantages to both parties: for our clients it gives them the surety of price, and for our customers it gives them the surety of volume. “It’s a matter of providing the best solution all round,” Marcus says. The capacity to manage the full circle of forestry production is a strategy that has evolved along with the company. It was founded in Whanganui in 2004 as Forest Owners Marketing Services (FOMS), initially confining itself to managing just harvesting and marketing, by Peter Gresham and the late Mike Bartells. businesscentral businesscentral Each edition priority delivered to your door. . PAGE 14 Forest360 today manages 40,000ha of forest for a multitude of clients. “We wanted a name that signified what we do, and that’s everything forestry.” They built the company up to have a staff of nearly 20 managers, mainly servicing the Tokomaru East Forestry Company (TEFCo), a syndicated company which owned 700ha of forest near Whanganui. Peter Gresham was the chairman of TEFCo, and he bought the shares when the original shareholders exited the company around 2012. Peter then divested his shares to his son Adam Gresham, Whanganui operations director Marcus Musson and the current Managing Director, Dan Gaddum. FOMS, as it still was, then sought to broaden its services in 2018 by buying out another company, Woodnet, which had a staff of about 10 specialising in forest establishment and carbon management. The two companies were merged and re-branded as Forest360 in 2021. “We wanted a name that signified what we do, and that’s everything forestry,” Marcus says. Forest360 today manages 40,000ha of forest for a multitude of clients ranging from large corporates, to medium-sized syndicates, to farmers and mum-and-dad investors. It also has an inventory of cable-haulers, diggers, bulldozers and other machinery that it leases out. Most recently Forest360, now one of the country’s larger forestry management companies with over 50 staff nationwide, has entered the South Island market by buying out a small but well-established Christchurch company, Trans-Tasman Forestry. “We see Trans-Tasman as our beach-head in Canterbury at a time when there’s a fair amount of new forest establishment and forest management thanks to the Emissions Trading Scheme,” Marcus says.
