Daniel is part of a the Apollo Projects Hawke’s Bay regional team, headed up by Steven Bailey, who has worked on multi-court stadiums before and is familiar with the intricacies of design and engineering needed to build courts that are up to competition level standards. That previous experience helped his company, Apollo Projects, win the competitive tender for this project because it meant they could provide a concrete figure early on for the many features needed to allow the space to serve four different sports: from removable netball posts to viewing windows capable of withstanding the force of a not-so-well aimed futsal ball. “For example the design has to consider the required clear headroom above the courts for sports such as competition volleyball, which meant a ceiling height of 12 metres, but the challenge that posed was that we wanted ceiling hung basketball hoops that can be retracted so they required structural engineering to make it possible to bring them up and down with the flick of a switch,” says Steven. Significant architectural input together with iwi consultation inspired design features to complement the building’s highly engineered internal specs, with the length of the Kingspan façade on the northern aspect carefully crafted to represent the two nearby pa sites on the historic Otatara Pa reserve. The building will measure 5600 square metres which makes it a little smaller than a rugby field but bigger than a hockey turf. Its successful construction will involve: 5,200 tonnes of concrete, three kilometres of electrical cable, 250 tonnes of structural steel and 5,300 square metres of sprung timber floor to be hand laid. Despite the complexities Apollo Projects seem to be handling the Pettigrew Green Arena Expansion Project with professional ease. “It’s incredible how easy it’s been to deal with them,” says Craig. “I recently built a home and that was harder work than Apollo building this multi-million complex.” Indications are that bookings for the new facility and its courts are already running full. Which means it’s a good thing that this is phase one of what can be extended in any direction to reach a total of 11 courts to serve the region. It’s a massive undertaking and while the goal has always clearly focused on the health and well-being of the locals, especially the youth, with 90% of their users being under 19 years old, the facility will be big enough to host national tournaments. “Team sports provide a real culture for the development of youth well-being,” says Craig. “But it also provides interaction for parents coming along to help and watch. So we’ll get spin off. This is about community well-being but community users don’t play sport in school holidays. National tournaments are played in school holidays and they bring visitors to the region.” Current usage is more-or-less split between Napier and Hastings. Estimates across both stadiums, the old and the new, show around 500,000 visits in a year, with some nights hosting 3000 players by the time all the sports have had their turn, generally with parents watching. “Sports create healthy outcomes not only in fitness but mentally, and at $20,000,000 this is a significant investment in the health and well-being of the youth in Hawkes Bay. Plus it’s of massive economical benefit,” says Craig. “We’re already talking about a 100 team tournament next year of under 17’s and under 19’s with all their parents. We’re proud to be part of it.” “Team sports provide a real culture for the development of youth well-being.” MPT Concrete is pleased to partner with Apollo Projects to provide quality concrete foundation slabs for the new extensions at Pettigrew Green Arena.
