| 47 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Taupō District Council: Taupō Airport Terminal Building The new Taupō Airport terminal will be approximately three times larger than the existing one and offer a sizeable car park. camex civil The Camex Civil team is excited to be helping to shape Taupō for the future by playing a part in the $20.6m Taupō Town Centre Transformation (TTCT) and $9.237m Taupō Airport Terminal projects being completed in 2022. Camex branch manager Stephan Brink says his TTCT team is completing the transformation of Tongariro Street, which includes a reduction to two lanes and a slower speed zone along with improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. The next stage is now underway, which will see Roberts Street and Lake Terrace transformed into a people-friendly environment, including one-way traffic, freeing up space for retail and hospitality, and creating a world-class waterfront. “It’s been an exciting project to be involved with, creating an urban environment that future generations can be truly proud of,” says Stephen. “We’ve been heavily involved with the Council and wider project team throughout, especially as the design was still being finalised. Camex provided solutions to ensure the best value and materials have been repurposed wherever possible. For example millings from the old pavements are recycled for reuse on driveways, old concrete from kerbs and footpaths are crushed for aggregate and existing cobbles are removed and distributed to community organisations.” Across town, another Camex team has been busy at the Taupō airport site constructing a new car park alongside Watts construction that is constructing the terminal building. “The new car park itself is now constructed and once the terminal building is complete our team will undertake the connection to the new terminal, landscaping, street furniture and asphalting of the car park and pavements,” explains Stephen. “We’re excited to be a part of these projects that are shaping our town and we’re also really excited to be able to welcome so many young workers to the industry and play a part in setting them on a career path.” In the past 12 months alone Camex has offered full-time employment to eight trainees who had no pre-existing qualifications. It has also helped them obtain new skills and offered training and a path to formal trade qualifications using its accredited in-house trainers. Camex established a depot in Taupō almost three years ago and now boasts a team of over 40 local employees: “It’s about giving our people long-term employment skills and supporting the growth of the community. It’s been great to have so many locals become a part of that.” Elsewhere in the Taupō district, the Camex water reticulation team is working on water main renewals in Acacia Bay and its roading team has started on a pavement rehabilitation project on Poihipi and Orunui roads. Camex is also working on the new Countdown plus constructing several new subdivisions. Shaping Taupö for the future
