We really want to make a great impression on our visitors and the new terminal will give us the space to be able to do that.” Andy says that the airport terminal project will benefit a whole range of industries based around the airport that play important roles in the district and beyond contributing to the local economy and community. A well-established sky diving destination, a growing aviation engineering industry, the Greenlea rescue helicopter, and a strong agricultural and forestry aviation sector are all based there. Argus Aviation manager Greg Newton, whose business operates a hanger at the airport, says they are busier than ever and the expansion project is welcome. “We usually have five engineers and a total staff of seven here and we currently maintain around 40 helicopters, coming from afar a field as Auckland and Wellington. “Most of the regular servicing can be done in one or two days, so people generally spend a day or two here and then can get on their way. We could use more room and are looking forward to growing with the airport. Taupō is perfectly located, not just for tourism but for all the associated businesses that a busy airport has, and it’s great to see that there are plans to make the most of all this potential.” The project has gone hand in hand with a transformation of the Taupō town centre. This project will take place in four phases, over two years, and aims to transform public places into spaces that attract people to spend time and invest in the town centre. “A great deal of traffic previously went along the Taupō lakefront and through the middle of the town centre,” explains Andy. “This meant that regional traffic went through town and separated the retail and hospitality areas from the lake and the main recreational event space, Tongariro Domain. This project seeks to reclaim the lake front for people by creating a pedestrian precinct and directing traffic behind the CBD.” He says the combination of the airport and town centre transformation projects will result in numerous spin off benefits for the local economy and the public. Other significant projects in the region include the Turangi Street Revitalisation Project and a footpath along the eastern arterial route. There are also a number of new subdivision projects to meet demand for housing as more people choose to make Taupō home. COASTAL HVAC Keeping You Comfortable All Year Round.
