T T Sue Russell Driven by a desire to provide those wishing to enjoy exploring the great outdoors, with a cost effective, stylish and very manageable campervan option, the team at Waikato’s J-Drop Campers knew that with careful selection of materials and stateof-the-art technologies, they could offer the consumer something rather special. It’s a small company, based out near Hamilton Airport, just south of the city. Operations Manager Richard Jones, along with brother and sister-in-law Graham and Julie (the bosses), have worked hard to bring to life a prototype J-Drop Camper, using materials designed to enhance its style and appeal. When dealing with a small space, careful consideration needs to be given to making best use of every centimetre. The J-Drop, contains a sleeping area accessed from side doors and a fully-functioning kitchen housed under its lift-up shade canopy. When Business Central spoke with Richard mid-March the company was busy building its second J-Drop Camper. Richard says, having towed the prototype to all sorts of locations, has stirred up real interest from the public. “We took it out to the big car show at Kumeu and it attracted a great deal of attention; we ran out of brochures to give away. I think there are many reasons why our J-Drop Camper pushes the right buttons,” Richard explains. First, the aluminium exterior can be coloured to any choice the owner wants. It can even be vinyl wrapped with any design you can imagine, to really individualise the camper. “We have also gone to great lengths to get the very best components and materials on offer. We wanted to create a camper that made a real style statement and the lines of the J-Drop Camper are really appealing to the eye.” Extensive use of Birch plywood also gives the camper a retro-sophisticated edge. The doors, sourced from the United States, Richard says, are the best on offer in the market and add to the overall appeal of the camper. “The doors have been specifically made and are very secure. Their shape and design complement the whole look of the camper.” The compact kitchen has everything needed to operate well when travelling. A sink, grey and clean water storage areas, sprung draws, space for a gas-hob cooker, a good size bench and storage shelves providing plenty of room for owners to personalise with all their kitchen needs. “We wanted to create a camper that made a real style statement and the lines of the J-Drop Camper are really appealing to the eye.” The sink has a built-in electric pump, and the kitchen has space for an electric cooler and two-burner stove. Inside the cabin has a low VOC varnished interior and the power system includes a 12V battery, USB ports and LED lighting in the kitchen and inside the cabin. Richard says driving the choice of materials used was a wish to not use anything of a disposable nature. “We wanted it to feel permanent and it has been engineered to the highest specs, ensuring owners enjoy many years’ of camping.” The J-Drop Camper rests on a custom-made trailer assembled in the Waikato. Local materials have been sourced and used as much as possible. “We know this camper is a real head-turner and we also know that owners will get real value for money from it.” To view the J-Drop Camper just give Richard a call – he will be happy to show the curious all its great features.
